Establish Brevard Elementary Muddy Sneakers Fund

In celebration of our mother’s 60th birthday, we are raising money to establish a fund for the Muddy Sneakers program at Brevard Elementary School.

Jeanne DeJong is entering her 22nd year as a fifth-grade teacher at Brevard Elementary School. She is one of Muddy Sneakers two longest-serving teacher partners, and has been with the program since it was piloted 15 years ago.

Every Muddy Sneakers expedition is consistent with the North Carolina state science curriculum using hands-on, experiential teaching methods. A one-year program provides each BES student with:

· 4 off-campus expeditions in DuPont State Forest, Pisgah National Forest, or Gorges State Park

· 2 on-campus expedition

· 2 ‘Skype-a-Sneaker’ classroom activitie

· 1 review for the End of Grade Science Test, consistent with state curriculum standards

We hope to honor our mom’s love of Muddy Sneakers so that every year, every child that passes through the school can learn science through the outdoor classroom.

More than 1,200 BES students have benefited from Muddy Sneakers. Our goal is to raise at least $5,000 so that Muddy Sneakers continues to be a formative and memorable part of our BES fifth graders’ experiences for years to come.

$75 – one student for one year

$300 – one student from each BES fifth grade classroom for one year

$750 – one student expedition group

$1,500 – one classroom for one year
