Establish the Animal Shelter in Decatur Co. TN!

With only 2 public meetings under our belt, Wags and Whiskers Animal Shelter has hit the ground running and is not looking back!

After our first meeting on December 10, 2022, several of the attendees who declared themselves ready to start immediately were invited to form the first Board of Trustees. A name for the shelter was decided upon and the 2nd public meeting was set up. After the January 21st public meeting, things really started moving quickly.

On January 24th we were able to remove 9 dogs from an unhealthy environment, 7 of which have already found stable, loving, forever homes. All of them were vetted, vaccinated and, for those that needed it, spayed or neutered with donations from the community and the Board of Trustees covering that cost. Another dog who had been abandoned in Bath Springs and brought to our attention at the January meeting, was retrieved, vetted and neutered and is currently staying with a foster family until we can find a forever home.

Last week, the sheriff’s department informed us of a group of dogs, mostly puppies, needing to be rehomed and Cheryl Sparkman has been working tirelessly to find shelters and homes for all of them, as well as arranging to get them vaccinated and spayed or neutered. We have another list of 11 puppies (6 females, 5 males) that we will need to begin working on this week.

It’s obvious that the need for a Shelter and Rescue in Decatur County, TN is massive, and we need community support to make this dream a reality. Fortunately, we have received an outpour of support from our community! We have one very generous donor that has promised to match donations to the animal shelter up to $10,000!!!! IF we can raise $10,000 from community donations, the donor will give us an additional $10,000!! Please share and help us achieve this goal so we can further help our residents and our dogs and cats. No donation is too small! It takes a village, and we greatly appreciate any donation!
