Establishing a Pediatric ICU at UNTH Enugu Nigeria
Donation protected
My name is Dr. Odiraa Nwankwor. I am a Pediatric Intensivist, and I work at the Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington Delaware and Cooper University Hospital, Camden, New Jersey.
We are organizing to establish a 5-Bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the campus of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, Nigeria in 2019. We are collaborating with the leadership at UNTH to make this project a success. This will be the first organized PICU in the country. Majority of the hospitals in Nigeria do not have the capacity and resources to intubate and mechanically ventilate children who are in respiratory failure. This is a pilot project with a potential to upscale to other major teaching hospitals across the six geopolitical regions in Nigeria.
Our mission is to create a healthcare space where children who are critically ill, are treated in an intensive care environment.
We have assembled medical equipment, devices and supplies donated by;
1. Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington Delaware
2. Cooper University Hospital, Camden, New Jersey
3. PromptCare Companies, Inc, New Providence, New Jersey
These medical equipment, devices and supplies are valued at about two hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($250,000.00 USD). These supplies will fill up a 40' container. I have received a twenty-seven thousand and fifty dollars($27,050.00USD) grant from the Nemours Global Outreach to support the travel costs of Nemours Associates (Doctors, Nurses, Respiratory Therapist) traveling to Nigeria for this project.
We have assembled a team of Pediatric Intensivists, Pediatric ICU Nurses, Pediatric Respiratory Therapists, Pediatric Pharmacists, Fellows and Residents who would be coming to Nigeria to assist in training our local partners. We plan to install these equipment during the training, and start the process operationalizing the new Pediatric ICU.
At this point, we still need funds for the following;
1. Shipping of a 40' container load of the medical supplies from New York to Tincan Island Port, Apapa Lagos, Nigeria - $5,300.00
2. Cost of clearing (including duties) the medical supplies at the port of entry in Nigeria- $ 7,000.00
3. Haulage of the container from Lagos to Enugu- $1,000.00
4. Installation of medical equipment including electrical wiring and step up & down transformers- $1, 350.00
5. Storage of medical supplies at Public Storage Cherry Hill New Jersey at $202. 66/month for 10 months - $2, 026.60
ESTIMATED TOTAL COST= $16,676.00
We are currently seeking a waiver of import duties and tariff from the Federal Government of Nigeria. If this is granted, it will drastically reduce the cost of clearing the supplies at the port of entry.
I will keep updating this page with any development and progress.
Thank you so much for your kind donations.
