In Memory of Estephan Hernandez

Estephan Hernández, 21, passed away on the night of September 28, 2017.  The CSULB student was robbed of a bright future when was brutally murdered in the intersection of East 148th Street and Bahama Ave near his Compton residence.

Estephan, 21, was on track to receive a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from California State University, Long Beach next spring.  He had lifelong track record of academic excellence, including being listed on the CSULB President's list of academic achievement for four semesters and was also on the Dean's List.  Through the Men’s Success Initiative (MSI) at CSULB, Estephan mentored young African American and Latino male students in the community.  As a first generation Chicano student, he would've been the first in his family to graduate from college.

Prior to attending CSULB, Hernandez graduated with honors in 2014 from King Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science in South Los Angeles where he served as Class President.

Estephan was the best son, brother, cousin, and friend we could ask for.   He was a happy and compassionate young man who wanted to make a positive impact to those around him.  He will be deeply missed by many friends, classmates, colleagues and family.

Please help of provide some comfort and peace of mind to a family that is deeply hurt by this hateful, unjust and unwarranted violence that occured steps away from their home.

I am raising funds to help provide his parents, Ricky and Lydia (Sujey) Hernandez, with financial assistance for memorial expenses not covered by the State. A check will be provided to Mr. and Mrs. Hernandez at the end of the campaign for the sum of total donations less GoFundMe fees: GoFundMe typically deducts a 5% fee from each donation and WePay deducts 2.9% + $0.30 per donation.

Although the GoFundMe campaign will end on Monday, October 9th, this homicide remains unsolved with no leads. We plead to anyone that may have any information regarding this incident to reach out to the Los Angeles Homicide Bureau at (323) [phone redacted]. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling (800) 222-TIPS.
