Ethiopian Spine Center (surgery, treatment)

Ethiopia, a nation in the Horn of Africa is the home of 120 million people. 70% (84 million) of the population are younger than 35 years of age. 60% (50.4 million) of this young age-group suffer from chronic back pain, and 3.6 million of them need surgery. Unfortunately, the cost for conventional spine surgery, the surgical trauma, associated complications, and the lengthy recuperation make it impossible for most of these young people to benefit from surgery. Most of them remain disabled and unable to provide of themselves or their families. Unfortunately, because of lack of resources, Ethiopia has not been able to invest in the new minimally invasive spine surgery technologies. However, there are many young, bright surgeons who are keen to learn these new technologies in order to help their communities.

           Dr. Said G Osman, M.D., an American Spine surgeon, and a pioneer in the field of endoscopic spine surgery has offered to train spine surgeons at the ALERT Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and has been giving Zoom lectures to these surgeons. Unfortunately, as stated earlier, because of a lack of the necessary equipment including endoscopes, endoscopic tools, radiolucent operating tables, and image intensifiers (mobile X-Ray machines), Dr. Osman has not been able train these surgeons. Dr. Osman has made the commitment to travel to Ethiopia to teach these surgeons the safest and the least traumatic surgical techniques which can be performed as outpatient or short hospital stay bases as soon as they get the necessary equipment at the hospital.
