Evanston for Malawi
Donation protected
We are raising money to help Andrews Nchessie and his colleagues continue to expand the farmland owned by the schools in rural Malawi. After a famine seven years ago prevented children from attending school for months at a time, the school now grows its own food, with a harvest feeding some 1500 kids for the full school year. But with COVID, the crops must be expanded to help feed the school as well as much of the village.
Every penny of your donation will go straight to Andrews in Malawi, a Top 50 teacher in the Global Teacher Prize, to help keep his schools running and children healthy, despite being one of the Top 10 POOREST countries in the world. The new goal for the 2021-22 school year is to add another $3000, which is equivalent to just over 2 MILLION Malawian kwacha, to last winter's total!
It really is true that even small donations make a big difference for this particular project! If you can donate $1 or $5, this helps since $1 is equivalent to over 815 Malawian kwacha.
These funds will allow the purchase of new land, seed and fertilizer for maize, potatoes and peas. It will also provide maintenance money for the newly installed irrigation wells and pumps, that will allow them to continue to grow two harvests per year, even through the dry season and future droughts. Some NEW SCHOOLS are also joining in and using our model!!
This is all run through the schools, and parents and students all maintain the crops by hand; there are no tractors or other machines, other than hand tools. The school curriculum has a focus on the crops and students learn how to plant and grow the crops in a sometimes challenging environment.
