Alejandra to Study Abroad in India!
Donation protected
My name is Alejandra Pérez and I am undocumented, unafraid, and unapologetic. I was born and raised in Guatemala, and I immigrated to the United States when I was 12 years old. While living in California, I was told that I wasn't able to go to college because I was undocumented. Although this information wasn't true, I internalized it and completely shut down the idea of going to college. Three years later, I moved to Seattle, WA and went to Cleveland High School where I learned that I could go to college.
Today, I am a senior at the University of Washington Bothell, majoring in Society, Ethics, and Human Behavior and American and Ethnic Studies and I will be graduating this June of 2016! Throughout the last nine years of living in the U.S., I haven't been able to explore the world. I have been officially accepted to go on a study abroad trip, during spring break (March 12-March 27th, 2016): Gender, Media, and Human Rights in India. I will have the opportunity to gain knowledge from wonderful women and third-gender folks in India, and further develop my understanding of global intersectional feminism.
I have applied to multiple scholarships to meet my $5,300. However, unfortunately, if I earn those scholarships, they will not cover my full expenses. Please help me achieve my goal to study abroad in India as an undocumented student!
I would be honored, blessed, and so thankful to all of you who contribute to my learning, as you kind contribution will allow me to grow beyond borders.
Trip expenses:
Study Abroad Program Fee: $3,000
Study Abroad Fee: $250
Plane Ticket: $260 (left to pay)
Vaccinations: $400 (as I do not qualify for insurance)
Total: $3,910
My family and I would highly appreciate every type of donation. I will also send every single one of you a personalized thank you letter and update you about my trip. I will also have a blog, to document my experience as an undocumented student traveling abroad. I will keep you all updated about where to be able to find it.
Again, thank you all for the emotional and financial support. Sending you all so much love and power.
In solidarity,
Ale
