Support Chicago Cane Coop's Recovery & Transition

Donation protected
Hi, we're Sophie and Martha, founders of Sugarwitch Ice Cream Sandwiches in St. Louis, but cousins to Daniel Regueira, co-founder of Chicago Cane Cooperative. On August 14, 2023, Daniel suffered a complete L1 spinal cord injury when a driver collided with his motorcycle. He is not expected to walk again. While Daniel and his family have a tremendous support system, as fellow small business owners in the early stages of growth, we know that a disruption of this magnitude can have a huge impact on every aspect of operations.

We're seeking to rally support around CCC and their incredible product and mission! Launched six months ago after many years of R&D, CCC carefully and ethically sources sugarcane to create uniquely flavorful small-batch rum; they are also Chicago's first worker-owned distillery, and cooperative values inform their company ethos, production, and labor practices. It's a company built for and by a community of care.

Daniel has had his hands in every part of the business. He developed the rum recipes from scratch, and spearheaded the formation of the cooperative by deep-diving into the legal ins and outs of co-op organization. He brings his design background and creative direction to the brand; he's also been the one hitting the ground to get CCC's rum into glasses around Chicago. Finally, Daniel invested substantial personal funds to the start-up of CCC. While Daniel is recovering from his injury and reimagining his role, support will be needed to fill in these many gaps and ensure that CCC can maintain the momentum that Daniel has worked so hard to create.

What does CCC need now?

Funds to assist with:
  • Hiring sales people for on-the-ground promotion
  • Legal and administrative expenses surrounding the continued development and implementation of co-op by-laws
  • The creation of a robust HR program
  • The development of a financial foundation that will enable CCC to seek appropriate external financing as they grow.

Community support, in the form of:
  • Buying a bottle of CCC rum and toasting to Daniel's health!
  • Telling friends about CCC and everything they stand for (let's make some noise!)
  • Asking your local bar or bottle shop to stock CCC's rum!
  • Holding Daniel in your thoughts as he navigates this huge transition.

CCC appreciates that not everyone has dollars to spare, and non-monetary support is truly and deeply valued as well.

All funds raised through this GoFundMe go directly to CCC.
