URGENT- Spain's Biggest Horse Sanctuary Needs Food

Los Caballos Luna / Paard in Nood Spanje, founded by Laura Hoitsema in 2012, is a Dutch foundation that offers shelter to horses in Spain that are in need. Horses that have been abused, dumped in abandoned stables, released along the highway or left to die because the owner can no longer afford to feed them. These horses are in terrible condition when Laura and her volunteers see them for the first time.


As soon as the foundation receives a rescue notification, Laura starts the process to rescue the horses. This includes the permission of various authorities, the various permits to transport a horse from location to location, a vet to check the overall health, registration of the horses (chip and passport) and the transport itself to the foundation. 

Depending on how 'quick' the authorities put their signatures on the required paperwork, the horses can be transported to the foundation. Sometimes it takes a few hours or a week, sometimes it takes months... And here is where the problem started...

The problem
If a rescue notification has to be brought to court, the horses are used as a deposit and cannot be re-homed. The costs for the maintenance of the horses are paid by the foundation. The foundation receives no support from the Spanish or Dutch government and is therefore dependent on donations.

More than two years ago, the foundation received a rescue notification in which 42 horses were confiscated. All these horses went to the foundation, where they are still today. Normally, the release of the horses in such a case takes two years, but since the owner of the horses turned out to be a proper criminal also, this case can take another four years ...

Currently, the foundation's lawyer is fighting for a meeting with the judiciary, because it's impossible to feed the 42 horses for another four years, in addition to the 150 other horses that are also at the foundation.  Because of this case, the foundation is in serious financial trouble and in debt to the hay farmer, which they now repay bit by bit every week.

How is it possible that a foundation, that helps the horses in Spain and cooperates with the police and the judiciary, does not receive any financial support?

Currently the foundation has a monthly deficit of € 4,000 so if  that's what  we can raise now, we would be more than grateful!

Hay, medicines, vet, farrier, blood tests etc. entail a lot of costs. Due to the poor harvest, a small bale of hay doesn't cost € 4 anymore, but € 8. The foundation is currently buying bales of € 110 each (they used to cost € 77), which 30 horses can eat from, per day. The foundation has more than 200 horses to care for...


Why should you support the foundation?

As a personal friend of Laura, I know her determination to save all these horses is bigger than anything else. She  will never quit. She moved from a house to a caravan and wears clothes that are donated.  She always seems to manage but at the moment the bills are piling up...

Other than that:
- It has saved 2,455 horses since its establishment in 2012
- It is the largest horse shelter in Europe and they also try to help horses outside of Spain.
- It is 100% dependent on donations and gifts and runs entirely on volunteers. This means that no salaries are paid and that there is no financial support in any form of subsidies, etc.
- It has the ANBI status, which means that donations are tax deductible.
- In addition to rescuing horses, it is also committed to education and information so people know how to handle horses, in any situation.
- It is a recognized training company where young people can put their studies into practice as an intern and learn more.

Los Caballos Luna / Paard in Nood Spanje, opgericht door Laura Hoitsema in 2012, is een Nederlandse stichting die onderdak biedt aan  paarden in nood, in Spanje. Paarden die zijn misbruikt, in verlaten stallen zijn gedumpt, langs de snelweg zijn vrijgelaten of voor dood zijn achtergelaten omdat de eigenaar het zich niet meer kan veroorloven om ze te verzorgen. Deze paarden verkeren in een verschrikkelijke toestand als Laura en haar vrijwilligers ze voor het eerst zien.

Zodra de stichting een melding krijgt, start Laura het proces om de paarden te redden. Denk hierbij aan de toestemming van diverse autoriteiten, de diverse vergunningen om een paard van locatie tot  locatie te mogen vervoeren, de veearts om de algehele gezondheid te controleren, controle of de paarden geregistreerd staan (chip en paspoort)  en  het vervoer zelf naar de stichting.



Afhankelijk van hoe 'snel' de autoriteiten hun handtekening zetten onder de benodigde papieren, kunnen de paarden naar de stichting worden vervoerd. Soms duurt het een paar uur of een week, soms duurt het maanden ... En hier is het probleem begonnen ...

Het probleem
Als een reddingsoperatie voor de rechtbank moet komen, worden de paarden gebruikt als borg en kunnen ze niet worden herplaatst. De kosten voor het onderhoud van de paarden komen voor rekening van de stichting. De stichting krijgt geen steun van de Spaanse of Nederlandse overheid en is daarom afhankelijk van donaties.

Ruim twee jaar geleden ontving de stichting een melding waarbij 42 paarden in beslag werden genomen. Al deze paarden zijn naar de stichting gegaan, waar ze nu nog steeds staan. Normaal gesproken duurt het vrijgeven van de paarden in zo'n geval twee jaar, maar aangezien de eigenaar van de paarden ook een beroepscrimineel bleek te zijn, kan deze zaak nog eens vier jaar langer duren ...

Momenteel vecht de advocaat van de stichting voor een gesprek met justitie, omdat de stichting onmogelijk de 42 paarden nog eens vier jaar kan verzorgen, naast de 150 andere paarden die ook op de stichting staan. Door deze zaak verkeert de stichting in ernstige financiële problemen en staat zij in de schuld bij de hooiboer, die zij nu wekelijks beetje bij beetje afbetalen.

Hoe is het mogelijk dat een stichting, die de paarden in Spanje helpt en samenwerkt met politie en justitie, geen financiële steun krijgt van de Spaanse overheid?

Momenteel komt de stichting maandelijks € 4.000 tekort , dus als we dat nu minimaal kunnen ophalen aan donaties, dan is de stichting jullie al meer dan dankbaar!
