We are the Newark Junior High Rocketry Team from Newark California.
For the past 5 years we have competed in the Team America Rocketry Challenge, a competition for 7th through 12th grades to design, build and launch model rockets.
This is not a simple challenge, as our rockets need to carry 2 raw eggs 850 feet in the air and return them safely to earth in about 46 seconds. Most of the teams are advanced high school students who have all of the physics, aeronautics, math and engineering skills to perform well. We are 7th and 8th graders who simply try our best.
2 of the past 4 years, we have performed well enough to qualify for the finals of this competition, and we are already designing this year’s rockets, but we need help to accomplish our goal of making it back to finals.
NJHS is a Title 1 school, which means that most of our students in this competition come from families that can’t afford to contribute financially and our district has no budget to help out either. We are looking for $1000 for each of our 5 teams, to help cover the cost of rocket building supplies, but mostly to cover the cost of the motors that are used to get our rockets up in the air.
It cost about $100 to build a rocket and then about $25 for each single use motor. We need to make about 20 launches throughout the season, which brings out total for 5 teams to about $5000.
We could really use the help. Thank you.
