Evacuate a Helpless Family amidst Warstricken Gaza

Donation protected
In the face of bombings and air strikes of Gaza’s civilian spaces, our incredible friend Mohammed Shat (lovingly called Mo), his 11-year-old daughter, and wife and mother of his child, are attempting to evacuate the dire situation of endless war in Gaza. As a father, Mo has made the difficult decision to leave behind his family home, now reduced to ruins, in a desperate move to provide protection for his family.

All of us, as Maxwell alumni and Humphrey fellows of '23, have organized this fundraiser with grief in hearts for our fellow colleague and dear friend, and his cherished family. We, as close friends of Mo, urgently call for help to assist his evacuation from Gaza and ensure the safety of Mo and his family. Every moment is critical for their safety; our appeal is a race against time for a family in peril.

Endless nights in a waking nightmare

Over the past 100+ days, Mo’s family has endured unbearable horrors of incoming bombings, severe shortages of food and water, and water-borne illness in the Gaza Strip. Mo, along with his wife and 11-year-old daughter, remain in grave danger living amidst relentless bombings and avoiding air strikes wherever they’ve sought refuge.

Forced to relocate from Gaza City to Khan Yunis, from Khan Yunis to Rafah, their family’s situation has been precarious and life-threatening every location they’ve evacuated to. With no end in sight, every day has become solely dedicated to survival while Mo and his family exhaust the very last of their resources.

Once optimistic, A family now clutches onto any hope
In 2023, Mo graduated from a Fullbright scholarship from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He has always been well-known for his dedication to being of service to others. His peers and colleagues praised his presence as Mo brought a sense of optimism, calm, and approachability to all those around him.

Despite the daily horrors faced alongside his family, Mo's consideration and care for others remains unwavering. Mo's deep commitment to humanitarian efforts has positively impacted many lives; the current crisis in Gaza has put him and his family in a position where they now are the ones in need of immediate assistance.

Mo’s family desperately needs our help

We are coming together to raise funds to ensure a safe passage and the right to refuge for Mo and his family. All monies raised will go to their relocation and assist them in establishing a new life away from the turmoil forced upon them. This initiative is not just a plea for help; it's a race against time to save a family from the dangers of a war they did not ask for.

Your critical support: A lifeline for Mo's family

Your donation is a vital lifeline, mirroring the compassion Mo has shown the world through his humanitarian work. By standing with us, you are extending the same compassion Mo has consistently shown to others, providing his family with the urgent safety and security they desperately need.

All contributions will go to aid the following expenses:

  • $24,000 for Permits and Crossing: expenses for evacuating Gaza through the Rafah-Egypt border will come to $8,000 per person.
  • $3,000 for transaction costs: GoFundMe’s transaction fees and international transfer costs will come to an estimated $3,000.

We are deeply grateful for every contribution, each dollar making a significant difference, as it brings hope of a life of safety and protection to a family dedicated to helping others. You will be impacting real lives by aiding our great friend and his family to escape the war in Gaza and safely reunite them with the rest of their families abroad.

Help us reach our goal to bring Mo’s family to safety by sharing this campaign widely across your friends, families, and workplace. Even if you are unable to contribute, you can help Mo and his family by amplifying this message. Every form of support matters and ensures a safer reality for this family in need.
