Evacuate Maram and her Family from Gaza
Donation protected
Hi, we are Sophie and Grace, two friends from New York City who are creating this GoFundMe for our friend, Maram Mufid AbedAlBari, and her family.
Our friend Maram is an extraordinary Arabic and English teacher. She is a brilliant writer in both languages: though I have never met her in person, her words have touched my heart. Maram has been an Arabic teacher for more than three years, teaching students of all ages and backgrounds around the world through Zoom, which is how we have come to know her.
We are raising $30,000 to get Maram, her siblings, and her elderly parents, Mufid and Nima, to Egypt. Their home has long since been destroyed. They are displaced in Rafah, in harrowing conditions, under constant bombardment, surrounded by disease and starvation. An invasion is imminent: as of April 3, we only have a week until the ‘temporary ceasefire’ lifts. Every day, Rafah becomes a more dangerous place. Maram and her family need to be evacuated to Egypt immediately to save their lives.
She is 24 years old, and the youngest of three siblings. She is bravely trying to evacuate her family, including:
Her father, Mufid Qasim AbedAlBari, 65;
Her mother, Nima AbdAlAziz AbedAlBari, 60;
Her older sibling, Muhanned Mufid AbedAlBari, 34;
Her older sibling, Mahmoud Mufid AbedAlBari, 27;
And herself, Maram Mufid AbedAlBari, 24.
In order to evacuate to Cairo through Rafah crossing, they must raise $5,000-$7,000 per person in their five-person family.
Please read Maram’s experience of Gaza before the war in her own words here. “Ever since I was a child, I've always been fascinated by the beauty of the sky and its colors. I've always found my inner peace whenever I look at it—but that same peaceful sky filled me with the terror of every Israeli aggression on Gaza,” Maram wrote in June of 2023. “Freedom of movement. Travel. Seeking medication. Pursuing education. Making a spiritual journey. All, while being everyday occurrences to most people, are unfamiliar things to Gazans.”
Please consider donating if you are able and please share widely. Thank you so much for your generosity in helping us save the lives of our friend and her family.
Here is a note from Maram on February 15th. It’s been nearly two months since then.
“It’s day 131 and we’re still escaping death and evacuating from a place to another. Our home is destroyed and my family and I are currently living in a tent where there’s no electricity, no internet connection, no food, and no clean water. We have no source of income, yet the prices are 10x doubled! If we’re not dying from the bombing, we’re going to die from hunger. The situation is unbearably horrible in Gaza. We survived death hundreds of times. The Israeli tanks surrounded our house and started firing at us; we experienced hell for more than 9 hours!! We cannot endure living in this anymore! My family and I deserve to live in peace for the rest of our life! Please, help us survive this nightmare.”
We are going to continue updating Maram’s supporters with her own words whenever she has access to the internet.
