Evan Hammell Heart Transplant Medical Expenses
Donation protected
My name is Kelly and I am Evan's aunt. I am raising funds to help cover medical expenses related to Evan's upcoming heart transplant. Evan was a normal, healthy 14 year old until a couple days after this past Christmas when he seemed to have caught a stomach bug. But after a week and still feeling ill, his mom and dad took him to the ER. At that time they were unable to find anything wrong with him and instructed them to follow up with their regular doctor. Upon that doctor visit they were told there may be something wrong with his gall bladder and a test was scheduled. However before that test could even happen Evan took a turn for the worse and they went back to the ER. This time the doctors realized something was very wrong with Evan's heart. Things progressed quickly from there and he was transferred to the Helen Devos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids. Unfortunately it became apparent that his heart was badly damaged and a heart transplant would be his best option for treatment. DNA testing has revealed that Evan has a rare mutation on the TTN gene that can cause a predisposition to heart conditions. Evan has since been transferred to the University of Michigan Hospital where he is intubated and on an ECMO machine while he awaits transplant. The family could really use help paying medical bills and other expenses such as travel and lodging. As you can imagine the expenses, even with insurance, quickly add up. Evan will need ongoing care after the heart transplant including many follow-up trips back to U of M and medications. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
