Everest To End Duchenne: Makenna’s Trek 2024

Hi everyone!! This coming November I have the opportunity to trek to the Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal with an organization called Hope for Gus. The Hope for Gus Foundation fundraises and spreads awareness for individuals affected by Deschenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Gus is a young boy who is affected by DMD. I have known Gus since we were kids as our family’s have close ties. I am joining the team this year to trek for not only Gus, but the hundreds of young boys affected by this disease. As the team reaches base camp we will read the names of these individuals affected.

DMD is a severe form of muscular dystrophy that primarily affects boys. It is caused by mutations in the DMD gene, which is responsible for producing dystrophin, a protein essential for muscle function. Without dystrophin, muscles deteriorate over time, leading to progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. Most children are diagnosed under the age of 5. DMD is 100% fatal, as there is no cure. We can work together to fundraise for the cause and give hope to find a cure.
