What a year it’s been for Joey Yaya Schares...
Thanksgiving weekend he fought horrible pain and finally broke down and went to the hospital for what he thought was kidney stones. After CT scans and other various tests it was discovered that he had diverticulitis. A few days on antibiotics and he’d be ready to go home. Such as his luck, there was a hole in his instestine and he became septic-immediate surgery was needed. After surgery he learned he had to deal with a stoma and a colostomy bag for the next 6 months. It was just as tough mentally as much as physically. However he embraced it and dealt with it for a LONG 6 months. #yayastrong
Fast forward to May 30th- Reversal Day! Hallelujah!
Dr. McMahon scheduled a laparoscopic surgery for 8:30am so we were up and on our way to the hospital by 6am. Checked in and was sent to lucky room #7. Nancy was our pre op nurse, pretty ironic since that is mom’s name. They told me it would be a 5 hour surgery and said to follow patient #2299, notice more lucky numbers! That’s where his luck ended...
At 1:45pm I finally met with the doctor and learned that the reversal didn’t go as planned. Joey had scar tissue so they weren’t able to go in laparoscopically, had to open him all they way up again. And according to the doctor, there was a small perforation when he reattached the stoma. He had to remove that portion and when trying to reattach again, the two sections weren’t the same size, so they had to give him an ileostomy on his right side! Which means 4 to 7 days in the hospital for recovery, two more months with a bag and then yet another surgery to hopefully get him back to normal.
Obviously this means double the medical expenses and even more time off work. I know he didn’t want me to do this but he is a pretty proud person as most of you know. Any help to offset his expenses is deeply appreciated!
Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as I know he was looking forward to be moving on from all of this.
