Kona’s Surgery

Donation protected
Recently my dog, Kona, had to go under the knife for emergency surgery to remove a foreign body from her stomach and intestines.  She made it through the surgery fine and is now at home resting and recovering.

After looking at the obstruction that was removed my family and I can track this issue to a specific incident...Back in November of 2017, when my Mom and Dad were building their home they were renting an apartment (where Kona and I lived). Kona would go play with their dog, MacKenzie, and it was nice being so close in proximity. We had dog toys in the apartment and one of those toys was an 18 inch nylon rope tied with a large knot at each end and small knots in between so the two dogs could play tug of war.

On one day in late November 2017 the dogs were playing with the rope and all of a sudden I noticed the rope was gone. I asked "where did the rope go?" We looked everywhere in the apartment and found no rope. Could Kona or MacKenzie have eaten the rope? No way we thought we were right here. So we came to the conclusion in the play of it all Kona threw the rope up and over the small 3 ft. patio fence. I went to look outside the fence the next day and found no rope. Did another dog find the rope and run away with it? Still in the back of my mind I was still bothered wondering if one of the dogs had ingested the rope. We kept a close eye on both dogs and they continued their normal routine with eating and pooping in normal fashion. So we called it "The Magical Rope". Just disappeared.

Now December 26, 2018, over 13 months later, Kona starts to have these intense vomit issues and into surgery she goes. So today at 10am we pick up Kona from the trauma center. We get home and get the nerve to open the bag they gave us after surgery with the foreign object inside. We put on our gloves, hold our breath and... low and behold.... The Magical Rope! Oh my goodness, not so magical. My heart and mind cannot imagine what this loving dog has been going through all these months. Our original vet said there was no way the rope could be the culprit and even the trauma team thought it was a far reach. What dog could have such a large item in their stomach for so long?

When they did the surgery they discovered Kona has several lesions in her belly which were either removed during surgery or will heal with time. She has 6 medications, bland diet, cold compresses every 4 hours for her 12 inch incision for the next two weeks, keep her calm and she is expected to make a full recovery.

As you can imagine, the cost of these surgery's, medications, and vet visits have become a tremendous expense I was certainly not prepared for.  If you have the means to help it is so greatly appreciated!  And if you have a dog please please please remove all rope/rope-like toys from your home so you and your fur baby never have to endure this ordeal.

Thank you to everyone for caring about our situation. We would be lost without you!!
