Excellence not Empire
Donation protected
We have come together as a group of people working in the social sector and public service who are grateful for the honours that have recognised our work, and by extension the collective efforts for social justice in the UK. However, the association of honours with our colonial past is an unacceptable barrier to the system being inclusive, and one we can all take pride in.
To remedy this problem we are asking for the word 'Empire' to be replaced by 'Excellence'.
With these funds, we will be able to run a small dedicated campaign to achieve this vital change. It will be a campaign that highlights the achievements of people in the social sector, and the human stories behind the need for an inclusive honours system. The funds will also enable us to make the public and political case for change.
Many of us who are lucky to have received an honour, will have spent a fair chunk of money buying new outfits, lunch for our families and friends or overpriced DVDs and photographs. We are now asking anyone committed to creating an Honours system we can all be unreservedly proud of, if you can contribute to this crowd funder. It will help us to build the digital and social media tools we need, and pay for someone to work part-time overseeing the campaign.
