Exercistas Go To Madison+ Ruby
Donation protected
Who are we?
We are Mixolidia and Sarah, and we are Rails Girls! We are full-time fellows in the 2015 Rails Girls Summer of Code. We have been teaching themselves to code and taking classes since 2012 and 2011, respectively. We met through a friend in the Seattle Tech scene. After a short meeting, We applied to 2015 Girls Summer of Code. We were accepted as one of 16 sponsored teams and became exercistas!
We call ourselves exercistas because we are working on exercism.io, a crowdsourced mentorship CLI app. Katrina Owen is mentoring us through the project. We work out of NIRD’s Capitol Hill offices, with Renée Hendricksen and the NIRD staff as our coaches.
We need your help getting to Madison+ Ruby in Madison, WI.
We won tickets to Madison+ Ruby! And NIRD is letting stay for free in their house. In order for us to be able to attend the conference, though, we still need travel and accommodations, and those cost money we just don’t have. Here is a basic breakdown of what your donations will cover:
Round trip airfare: $545 x 2 = $1,090
Per diem for food & public transit, $75 for four days: $300 x 2 = $600
Transit to/from the airport: $10
#HypeHarvest tickets: $15 x 2: $30
Campaign & credit card fees: $270
The impact of your donations
We are both early-career developers. By helping us go to Madison+ Ruby, you will directly be contributing to our career growth through networking, meeting potential employers, and sharing our experience in open source. At Madison+ Ruby, we will be able to meet one of the founders of Rails Girls Summer of Code as well as many inspirational speakers from a variety of backgrounds. We will give a lightning talk about our project—to everyone at the conference!
You’ll also be furthering the goal of Rails Girls Summer of Code: to get more women involved in open-source software. Open-source software is free and editable by anyone (check out our GitHub), and women are underrepresented in this community.
Donor Perks!
We appreciate every dollar you send our way, and we’d like to give you something in thanks. You can peruse our list of perks below. If you just want to make a donation without a perk, that’s possible too! Whichever way to decide to help us, we are extremely grateful.
What if we have leftover funds?
Our budget is an estimate, if we end up with additional funds we will donate them to organizations that support women learning to code:
Mixolidia Gautreaux will donate to #WOCINTECH.
Sarah will donate to Rails Girls Summer of Code to assist future fellows with conference travel.
