EXILE’s Publishing Excellence!

EXILE IS OUTSTANDING AMONG NORTH AMERICAN LITERARY JOURNALS! is what Joyce Carol Oates, the great American novelist, tweeted about Exile Quarterly, and our 96 page, no ads, full color, literary and visual arts magazine that celebrated 50 years in 2022!

WHY?

EXILE QUARTERLY is the only Canadian magazine dedicated to presenting our country’s diverse literary and visual arts creators. Publishing since 1972, over 3,000 Canadian contributions, alongside hundreds of international works, have appeared in our pages.

WE WELCOME ALL writers, artists, and readers into our Exile Community because we are a “community” that embraces individuals from as many heritages, positions, viewpoints, and personal perspectives as possible.

OUR PURSUIT OF INDIVIDUAL EXCELLENCE is to encourage, support, and mentor emerging, mid-career, and established talents, so they may all be equals in our pages.

WE ARE THE ONLY NATIONAL ARTS PUBLICATION with a charity-based vision and mission to Inform and Educate about literature and visual arts.

OUR CHARITABLE WORK, each year, provides essential opportunities for over 100 authors and artists by way of mentoring, editorial guidance, annual literary competitions (in 2023 awarding $20,000 to poets and fiction writers), artistic collaboration, public events, or simply encouraging a creative person’s ambitions.

+++

SINCE OUR FOUNDING IN 1972 we have insisted that Excellence Must Be Above All Else. And, until 2016, this resonated with both the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council, which for 40 years had been the primary funders through their “Core Publishing” programs – but 2016 was also the point when each of those bodies re-stated their mandates, insisting that (synopsis): the creation of art was now to be in service of outcomes based on political and/or social expectations and culture-defining directives; i.e. no longer a pursuit of excellence…

AS OF 2021 we receive no “Core Publishing” funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, nor the Ontario Arts Council (what was not long ago $150,000 each year for Exile Editions and Exile Quarterly). They have simply cut us off, both publishing houses, after 40-plus years of support, because we won’t play in their “new” arena.

BRINGING OUR MAGAZINE TO YOU requires compensating all the people who make Exile Quarterly happen: the contributing writers and artists (20%); the editorial staff (10%); the layout/design team (20%); the printers and digital formatters (40%); the postal costs (10%) – an overall budget (2022) of $100,000 each year (percentages are averages).

FUNDING – OUR FUTURE: We are 100% on the side of supporting each contributor’s individual vision in service of its own vision – But in NO WAY do we agree to being tied to governmental service, or their social ideas and ideologies.

IMPERATIVE IS THE SUPPORT FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU, who share our goal of a free and open creative community, uninhibited by Government Mandates or Ideologies! We are the EXILE Community that encourages ALL artists to be who they want to be. And, if they choose, to find a home in the welcoming pages of EXILE.

PLEASE JOIN US in our cultural and educational efforts, and help EXILE continue its pursuit of excellence by donating now.
