The leap from Paint to IT
Hello, my name is Brent Cox.
I had been working as an operations manager for the Sherwin-Williams Company in Roswell, Georgia, for five years when my wife, Donna, told me once again that her mother had suffered another fall. Living alone after Senior’s passing, her mother (Sandra) struggled with Lupus and its many complications. Donna had been worried about her well-being and, ever since returning from Senior’s funeral, had been gently persuading me to move to Utah to be closer to her mother.
Education Bound
The decision became easier when the opportunity to fund my education presented itself. Going back to school was a long-held dream of mine, and caring for Sandra in exchange for her support was an offer we couldn’t refuse. My passion for IT had always burned brightly. For years, I had been building my own PCs and diving deep into the intricacies of program infrastructure. It was Bob Davis (Senior) who first ignited my interest in this field. Bob, who lovingly ran “The Computer Shop” in Delta, Utah, taught me the joys of assembling computers, a hobby that quickly became a passion. Though Bob passed away in 2003, his influence on my IT journey remains a cherished memory.

Balancing my IT studies with family responsibilities was challenging but necessary. I needed a career with flexible hours to manage Junior’s diabetes and dialysis, support Ma through her battle with Alzheimer’s and diabetes, and care for my wife’s chronic health conditions. This flexibility would lead me to build a business that not only helped to support my family but also helps other businesses thrive with reliable IT management services.
In honor of their memory
Tragically, in 2016, life took a series of devastating turns. We lost our beloved daughter Tereasa, our precious granddaughter A. J., and my mother-in-law Sandra—all within the span of six grueling months. This heart-wrenching chain of events and the ensuing depression was suffocating. It felt as though a heavy fog had descended upon us, rendering us immobile and gasping for air, trapped in a prolonged state of sorrow and inertia. The emotional paralysis seemed to last for years, and now, as we finally begin to re-engage with life, I am haunted by the fear that I have squandered irreplaceable time that could have been spent more meaningfully. The paradox being in honor of their memory.
What has happened?
Despite my battles with soul-crushing depression, each hardship has become a steppingstone to greater triumphs. Over the years, in partnership with a renowned multi-vendor technical services company, I have repaired hundreds of printers, serviced countless laptops and desktop devices, hung numerous menu boards, and managed the most challenging network closets. While Be Smart Computing has always been nascent, it remains very much a start-up even after eight years. Parting ways with Barrister was a daunting moment, and I have taken this opportunity as far as I can without the necessary funds to back me.
My presence on Facebook and LinkedIn has grown, (I think, maybe) and I have posted numerous updates, always strategizing ways to amplify my reach and influence.
These achievements, borne out of perseverance and dedication, mark the dawn of a new era for my business.
The Need
What I need are advertising funds, prolonged funds to keep my hosting live, SEO funds to pay for software that will foster better visibility for my website, and platform funds that help managed services providers automate tasks. These essential components are critical to the sustainability and growth of my business. Advertising funds would enable me to reach a wider audience, showcase my unique IT services, and attract potential clients who can benefit from my expertise. Prolonged funds for hosting are necessary to ensure my online presence remains uninterrupted, providing clients with a reliable point of contact and information. Additionally, SEO funds are crucial to optimize my website, making it easier for clients to find my services through search engines, thereby increasing traffic and potential business opportunities. Without these resources, sustaining and growing my business becomes a formidable challenge.
What I’ve done
I am currently navigating the process of securing an SBA loan from my bank, which involves considerable paperwork and patience. Given my decade-long commitment to caring for my family, I have not had traditional employment, which affects my credit history. Nonetheless, I remain hopeful and dedicated to overcoming these challenges.
I have invested significant time and financial resources to launch my business, covering expenses like website fees, hosting, licenses, and insurance, yet the bills continue to accumulate. The threat of losing electricity or internet service is becoming a real concern. I have grown my business as much as possible without any advertising budget, and your support can help bridge this gap, allowing me to keep the lights on and to continue delivering essential managed IT services to businesses like the Bonnie Baker Senior Center for whom I just created their official Facebook page, without disruption.
The Goal
The goal is to raise $25,000, which aligns with the amount of my SBA loan application to support the growth and stability of my business. The first portion of the funds will be used to cover immediate personal expenses, ensuring that I can maintain basic utilities and continue to operate without interruption. Insurance also must be paid.
Once those initial needs are met, I plan to allocate a significant amount towards targeted marketing efforts. This includes investing in radio advertising campaigns aimed at small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to highlight the unique value our IT services bring to their operations. Additionally, I will intensify our social media presence through strategic marketing campaigns designed to expand our reach and attract potential clients.
These efforts will not only help sustain my business during this critical period but also lay a solid foundation for future growth. By enhancing our visibility and promoting our services more effectively, we can attract a broader client base and secure the resources needed to offer advanced IT solutions, thereby strengthening our position in the market.
Outfits like the Bonnie Baker Senior Center, with which I've had a gratifying business relationship for years, will greatly benefit from my services. By entrusting their IT infrastructure to our capable hands, they can focus on their core mission of providing essential services to the elderly, without the worry of technical disruptions.
Our Vision
In 5-10 years, I envision my business being a local leading provider of IT services for small and medium-sized businesses. I aim to expand our service offerings to include advanced cybersecurity solutions, cloud services, and comprehensive IT training programs. My goal is to build a robust client base, providing top-notch IT support that helps small businesses thrive in the digital age.
I also aspire to create job opportunities within my community, fostering local talent and contributing to the local economy. Ultimately, I want my business to be known for its reliability, innovation, and commitment to customer satisfaction.
