The theft and exploitation of natural resources on Southwest Native American Lands is one of too many issues facing Native Americans in the Southwest today. Throughout the history of the United States, Native American land has been stolen and exploited for the profit of nonnative entities. To this day, these problems still vehemently persist. Native households on average have only 8 cents for every dollar that a white family holds, exacerbating the problems caused by the extraction of natural resources. Mining can and will contaminate sacred lands and waters. One single coal mine could pollute an entire aquifer, poisoning sacred lands of an entire tribe. However, there are solutions such as encouraging lawmakers to pass laws to limit the extraction of natural resources, advocating for the use of renewable energy, and supporting organizations that fight for the rights of Native Americans to their land. One such organization is the Pueblo Action Alliance, an organization fighting for the implementation of renewable resources and against the extraction of resources on lands held by or sacred to Native Americans, such as the Greater Chaco Canyon Region. The alliance also fights for water rights for Native Americans in the Southwestern United States.
