Explorando el Ártico: expedición a Groenlandia

¡Nos vamos al Ártico! Una expedición de un mes de duración a bordo del Trineo de Viento Polar, un medio de transporte cero-emisiones que nos llevará de una punta a otra de Groenlandia, impulsados únicamente por el viento que llena sus inmensas velas. La expedición está organizada por Ramón Larramendi, uno de los mejores exploradores españoles y creador de este sorprendente vehículo, que parece sacado de una novela de ciencia ficción, pero no lo es. Solo necesito tu donativo para que esta aventura extrema se haga realidad en mayo de 2022.

Mi nombre es Lucía, tengo 25 años y soy creadora del canal de YouTube de divulgación científica Orbytal, además de química especializada en química orgánica. Como jefa científica de esta expedición, tomaré muestras de hielo con un taladro gigante y pescaré del aire todo tipo de virus, bacterias y algún que otro tardígrado. Todo ello lo traeré fresquito (jeje) de vuelta a los grupos de investigación que han confiado en mí para esta increíble tarea. Habrá muchas más mediciones además de estas, y todas son parte de proyectos de investigación públicos. Con ellas, llegaremos a entender, por ejemplo, cómo podrían afectarnos patógenos nunca antes vistos, ocultos en las profundidades del hielo ártico y que ahora con el rápido calentamiento global pueden ser liberados a nuestra atmósfera. También pondremos a punto aparatos que podrían viajar a Marte... ¡muy pronto! Esta tecnología detecta signos de vida en la superficie del hielo y podría ser clave para explorar los casquetes polares marcianos en un futuro.

Los dos apasionantes proyectos son idea y propiedad de grupos de investigación tanto de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid y la AEMET, como del Centro de Astrobiología (INTA-CSIC), respectivamente. Estos grupos están formados por gente maravillosa, con la que comparto un espíritu de aventura inmenso y que están sujetos a la precariedad a la que está sometida la ciencia en España. Nuestra colaboración no cuenta con un soporte económico que permita cubrir el coste de mi participación en la expedición. ¡Ahí es donde entras en juego tú! Toda ayuda significa muchísimo para mí.

Let's go to the Arctic! A month-long expedition on board the WindSled, a cero emissions means of transport that will take us across Greenland, powered only by wind. The expedition is organized by Ramón Larramendi, one of Spain's best explorers and inventor of this amazing vehicle. It sounds like something out of a sci-fi novel, but it's not. I just need your donation to make this extreme adventure come true in May 2022.

My name is Lucy, I'm 25 years old and creator of the YouTube channel "Orbytal", where we do science outreach and communication. I'm also a chemist, specialized in organic chemistry. As chief scientist in this expedition, I will take ice samples with a huge drill and I will collect virus, bacteria and maybe even tardigrades from the frozen air.  All the samples will be brought back to Spain to be examined by the research groups that have trusted me with this endeavour. I'll do many more samplings and measures and everything will become part of the research projects of these groups. With the knowledge we will gain doing this expedition we will be able to understand better how hidden pathogens, frozen in the entrails of the ancient ice and soon freed due to global warming, can distribute around and affect us in the future. We will also test machines that could go to Mars... very soon! This technology detects signs of life in the ice's surface and could be the key to future exploration of the martian polar caps.


These two wonderful projects belong to public research groups from both the Autonomous university of Madrid, together with the State Meteorological Agency, and from the Astrobiology Centre (INTA-CSIC), respectively. These groups are made up of fantastic people with whom I share an enormous sense of adventure and curiosity, who are subject to the lack of funds that plagues scientific research in Spain. Our collaboration doesn't have the kind of financial support that would allow me to pay for my participation in this expedition. That's where you can help! Every little gesture means the world to me.
