Extinguishing Firefighter Cancer
Tax deductible
Firefighters dedicate their lives to protecting others, but the dangers they face don’t end when the fire is out. Cancer is now the leading cause of firefighter deaths, with 72% of IAFF firefighter fatalities in 2023 linked to cancer [1].
Captain George Sisson spent his life in service to others. He began as a volunteer at the Rockville Fire Department, served over 30 years with Fairfax County Fire & Rescue, and continued his dedication even after retirement as a Fire Marshal Inspector for Arlington County. Firefighting wasn’t just his career—it was his calling.
After a lifetime of service, George passed away from cancer in 2020. During his battle, the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) stepped in to connect him with a network of fellow firefighters who had faced similar battles. Their support lifted his spirits during one of the most difficult times of his life.
To honor George’s legacy and support other firefighters facing similar battles, we’re proud to host the George L. Sisson Memorial 5K: Run to Extinguish Firefighter Cancer on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Burke Lake Park, VA. Proceeds from the event will benefit FCSN, helping provide critical resources, mentorship, and hope to firefighters and their families.
