Night of the Living Homework - A Short Film

Help us raise funds for our ambitious film, Night of the Living Homework, set to film in Perth this July!

"When the zombie apocalypse threatens his laid-back Aussie school life, Miles scrambles to form a team with his endearing-yet-annoying little brother, his studious girlfriend, and his quirky sports teacher to find a way out while confronting the undead, the otherworldly, and the idea of growing up."

A statement from our Writer and Director, James Garces:

'Night of the Living Homework is a story about growing up. Just like the real thing, it’s poignant, heartfelt, funny, and a little bit scary.

The project stems not only from my own personal experience, but also from the experiences of the community around us. As wacky as a zombie/high school/sci-fi film can be, it is nonetheless infused with the heart, the memories and the experiences of dozens of people. The story also touches on the complex, loving, ever-changing dynamics between siblings as they try to find their place in the world – not only as individuals, but as supporters of each other.

For those of you with siblings, I’m sure you can think of more than a few times growing up you wish they’d leave you alone, give you 5 more minutes with your favourite toy/game/tv show, stop hogging the shower, stop leaving half-eaten food out on the counter – I could go on. Being the eldest of 3, I can relate to all of them. In those moments, did you ever stop to think that one day you’d leave the nest, your time with them becoming sparse as the years go by? Do you miss them?

Our sibling relationship focuses on this moment. We always know it’s coming, but it’s never really something we think about until the time arrives. Miles is about to finish high school. Which means that after exams, and after university, he’ll be out in the big wide world, with his younger brother Noah seemingly left in the dust. Without spoiling too much, this moment in both of their lives is the key driving force that pushes our story forward, from its inception to its conclusion.

Currently, we’re hard at work bringing this film to life. With crew members both familiar and new, we’re working around the clock, drawing on our experience creating the successful short film Nothing Special to ensure that our production value is as high as it can be for what we are capable of as independent filmmakers in Western Australia. At the time of writing this, we’re about a month out from principal photography, and find ourselves looking to you, our audience, for the support that will get us there with the confidence and ability to deliver something we can all be proud of.

Thank you for any support you are able to provide. Through your donations, and through sharing this campaign around, you are helping to support the arts in Western Australia, support local independent filmmakers, and directly help bring to life a story that we can all resonate with.'

Your donations will be directly supporting our cast and crew in the making of our short film. From funding our costuming and design team, to providing catering to our team on set, every cent of your donation will be utilised to improve the production quality of our project.
