On October 23rd news outlets began to report a tragic incident which had happened in Galway during the night. By midday the whole country seemed aware of the incident, but also truly gripped by the story because of how heart-breaking the situation is and how simply it could have been any family’s experience. A beautiful and kind young student from Galway was struck by an illegal firework which had been set off pointed at crowded Eyre Square. Several reckless and careless people who lacked not only common sense in the first place but the respect and basic morals to come forward afterwards have seriously hurt a wonderful young woman and shaken her entire world. There are extremely serious physical injuries and emotional repercussions of this accident which as friends of the family, we hope to provide for.

This is an incredibly kind, genuine, intelligent, and gentle young woman who has been so resilient throughout the past couple of days. Accidents like this are terrifying and life-altering but surrounded by family and friends, our girl has already reminded us of how strong she is and so undeserving of such a nightmare. She does hope to keep her details private, as the mental and emotional trauma of this incident is already so severe. Physically, mentally, and emotionally, trauma such as this lead to huge expenses, and we are grateful for any help. We’re hoping to raise this money in order to financially aid the further medical treatments which will be required to heal her injuries.

Despite an obviously ineffective media campaign against illegal fireworks that has been active throughout this month in the run up to Halloween, these people were able to acquire the fireworks and set them off in a busy public space without gardai interference. This only adds to recent discussions about the lack of policing in public spaces at night and the decline of public safety in Galway throughout the last several years. We are hoping that by sharing this page, it may help to educate the public, push the government into action and raise awareness not only of the dangers of illegal fireworks but of acting carelessly and recklessly. As children we are taught to be responsible for our actions and to consider their effects on others, but that is forgotten too frequently. Had simple rules been enforced, this all could have been avoided.

Coming up to the holiday season we ask for the public’s help for this family. We are so grateful for any support whether it be donating a couple euro or sharing our plea and reaching out to your local representatives to discuss the obvious issues threatening public safety in the wake of frequent incidents such as this which could have been avoided.
