11/04/24 Nick had the amputation surgery. He has one finally surgery today to close the incision site. The goal is to ween him off the sedatives and wake him up ❤️ and I cannot thank you enough for your generosity, compassion, and sense of community you are providing for our family during this time. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
11/02/24 Update: the plastic surgeon finally weighed in with his ortho team. He stated he could do everything possible to salvage his leg, however, not without risks or possible complications. The initial “tissue transfer” surgery would be 12 hours, and IF it took, he would have a painful recovery and once they grew his tibia enough, they would then fuse his leg and foot together, so his foot would be stuck at a 90° permanently- not to mention he can’t walk on his left for at least a year and a half, with the outcome of still having to amputate later. Nick is a very active individual and would not want to suffer through that type of pain, in my opinion. I chose amputation because he can start PT almost immediately and he will resume a fairly normal active life. This surgery will take place mid morning, today. So as we face new adversities with this option- please continue to pray for the surgeons, the team, and most importantly my husband.
Thank you.
11/01/24 Update. Nick had his 3rd of many more operations yesterday. The goal was to complete a below the knee amputation due to the severity of his injuries in his right leg. The surgeon was able to remove the bottom part of his tibia and that part of his bone died. At this point we’re waiting for plastic surgery to assess him due to the amount of surgical intervention he will need to try to salvage his limb, and even IF it is possible, his quality of life will be less than ideal, as his leg/ foot will be fused together at a 90° angle. There are many complications and surgeries to maintain bone health and infection risk. His current surgeon does not find limb salvage possible and has opted to place his recommendation to amputate. His 4th surgery will be tomorrow, and depending on plastic surgery, this may be the day they amputate. This will ultimately provide best quality of life for him since he’s an extremely active individual. He is still highly sedated, and is unable to make these decisions himself, which lie solely on me, his wife, a decision no one should have to make. Thank you to the entire community for sharing and donating and most importantly, praying. This journey is far from over, and it’s barely just begun. from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Please continue to pray for my husband. Also, other ways to donate if you don’t feel comfortable donating through here:

most recent update as of 10/27:
Todays update: sorry it’s late, surgery didn’t start til almost 4. He had another blood transfusion throughout the night (which is normal)
They also plated and pinned his broken elbow, so that is currently casted. The plates/ pins will be a permanent fixture.
Prognosis is scary. The future is scarier, but where lies fear, lies hope.
The damage to his foot and leg is quite extensive. His foot is being on held on by his Achilles tendon. The nerves were severed and irreparable as they’re gone from the accident this means no feeling in the bottom of his foot. Bone is already starting to die in his foot.
His leg sustained extensive damage from
the open fractures, there’s holes that can’t be covered because there is no skin. There is no tissue and the muscle is starting to die. They removed the muscle that was dying.
Option 1: bone growth could happen, a mm a day, it will be quite painful and could take a long time, years, to regrow the bone lost. He won’t be able to walk properly on top of no feeling in his foot, plus additional complication could arise and it’s a good possibility the rest of his tibia will die eventually and we’ll back at square 1. If he does this option, he will not have the same quality of life at all.
Option 2: amputation below the knee. As devastating as this is, it’s the most sensible, safest way for him to regain some semblance of a life with being able to resume most of his activities he currently does. This is a decision I am not making, as they will be finally waking him up and having this tough conversation and allowing him to make this choice.
Both of of the choices are not ideal, but this is not an ideal situation. The situation as a whole is grave, scary, and providing support to him and our family is the best way that you can help out; he will struggle mentally, not being able to work , not being able to do normal activities for quite a while and he will need positive people to reach out and be that guiding light to help him see that life isn’t all that bad and that he can make the best out of such a crappy situation. As always thank you so much for the love and support. It means the world to us. If you could continue to say some prayers, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
