Yes I can. It's my new mantra.
When I was in grade school, my art teacher told me that I couldn't draw. And I believed her.
Then last year, during all that changed.
That's when, on a whim, I went to a Friday night paint-along… one of those evening events where an instructor guides everyone through painting a flower or a sunset or a still life. Amidst a room of rowdy wine-spilling women, while painting a simple sunflower, I realized that, yes, I could do this art thing!… and I liked it!
When I got home, I picked up a pencil and started drawing. I dug out ancient art supplies stuffed away in a closet, including a very old set of colored pencils. I played and experimented. I let loose. I just let my hands dance on the paper.
And the finished art really surprised me. Did I make that? Really? Yep, I did. Yes, I can!
Now I am ready to take the next step and push myself further. That's why I have set up this campaign.
I need to make up for some lost time and the art school I never went to.
In October 2015, I plan to take a weeklong colored pencil workshop in Boone, NC, from a nationally-recognized colored pencil instructor. I'm looking for support… for travel expensies and / or even a simple "attagirl!" To know that just because an art teacher didn't support me, others will.
Thanks for considering it.
And one more thought:
Whether or not you choose to throw me a few bones, the important thing is for you to know, deep-down, is that you can.
No matter what others have told you in the past, I am saying it to you now: you can. You really can.
