Earlier this summer, Fabi Barrios Castaneda underwent multiple emergency intestinal surgeries, spending three weeks at St. Joseph's Hospital in Eureka. She then headed home for a lengthy recovery under the care of her mother, Rosie Rosales.
Two weeks ago, while driving Fabi to a follow-up appointment, Rosie suffered a stroke and was flown to UCSF. She was transferred this week to a rehabilitation facility in San Leandro for physical and speech therapy. It is not yet clear when she will be able to return to Humboldt County. Fabi is currently recovering well, but her health does not allow her to travel to San Leandro.
It will be some time before either Fabi or Rosie can return to their jobs at Sun Valley Floral, and short-term disability benefits are notoriously slow in coming. Fabi and Rosie will need the support of our community to help them through this extraordinarily trying time in their lives. Whatever assistance we can offer will be hugely appreciated.
