The Faces of Eve

My Name is Niurka Barroso  , and I am the artist-in residence at Art Concept Alternative , Vero Beach, Florida.  As such, I have created a community art project called The Faces of Eve - A Photographic Tribute to the Power of Women, in which I have photographed the faces of 140 local women of all ages, social and cultural backgrounds. The photographs will be displayed in the form of a mural with no hierarchical distinction between these women, challenging conventional ideas of beauty, age, wealth, ethnicity and social status. The mural will serve as a mirror of social and cultural diversity.

In this pivotal time in women’s history, it is fitting to celebrate the glorious, powerful image of Woman as the hope of our future, focusing the lens on how each person who identifies as Woman sees herself and how she wishes to be seen, regardless of how society has insisted on labeling her throughout history. Please join me in raising awareness of the power of women by helping to make this project a success.

The 5ft x 17ft mural will be the Featured Art Installation at Women by Women Art Exhibit presented by Art Concept Alternative at Raw Space in Vero Beach, Florida opening December 14, 2018.

Women by Women will present 6 weeks of art, debate and connections celebrating women and showcasing contemporary women artists whose artwork is a social commentary on the most pressing issues facing women today. 

The Faces of Eve will also be the subject of a “Moth-style” Story Slam during the Women by Women event.

Additionally,  I plan to publish a Faces of Eve coffee table book, in collaboration with my friend Lu French.  The book will display each woman’s photograph individually along with the story she wishes to tell about herself and then how all these women come together in the mural to form one formidable image.

This project has been so well received in my community that it has inspired a dynamic group of Vero Beach women to form an eponymous organization with a mission to incubate women’s businesses, projects and brilliant ideas.
