Factorio MMO Server KoS/Cal
THANK YOU EVERYONE!
The Fundraiser is now closed (so clicking the Donate button should no longer do anything) as we have reached the goal! The server should be arriving sometime during the upcoming week. An unboxing video will be made! :-D
----------
The Spiffing Brit has thrown down the gauntlet and is trying to achieve new records for a Factorio MMO event where the goal is 500 players on his server at once, so maybe it is time for a fun and friendly competiton!
If our community, with our history of large MMO events, would like to take up the challenge, we would need a far more powerful - and dedicated - "server" for this. (This is actually a workstation, but Factorio cares only about single-core CPU performance, and the Ryzen 9 3900X is one of the best performing single-core CPUs on the market.)
Even if we fail to get the record itself, our community will almost certainly once again assert our place among the stars of the Factorio community, being mentioned in FFFs and on the Factorio forums. We'll be the talk of the town!
The Hardware will be bought and operated in Norway, and the run down of the items on the list are at follows (including the Norwegian price for each item):
ASUS ROG Strix X570-F Gaming, S-AM4 - NOK 2990,-
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X CPU - NOK 5690,-
Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD - NOK 2408,98
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 32 GB - NOK 1749,-
ASUS GeForce GTX 1660 Ti PHOENIX - NOK 3349,-
Corsair TX850M, 850W PSU (80 Plus Gold) - NOK 1249,-
NZXT H510i Black case - NOK 1249,-
Total cost: NOK 18684,98
Just as a disclaimer here: We are aware that these parts would be cheaper to buy outside of Norway, but since the operation will take place within Norway the added costs of both sending such a heavy package, with insurance, and also factoring in Norwegian import tariffs, that would make it more expensive than just buying the parts at a Norwegian outlet.
For the technically inclined among the community, please refer to this CPU Benchmark Chart to see where the Ryzen 9 3900X fits in on it's single-core performance. Factorio cares only about single-core performance (confirmed by Wube), and as you can see it's slightly above the Intel i9-9900K that will be used in our friendly competitor's attempt.
So what happens after this "competition"? The server will be used for regular MMO events, and we'll have the capacity to host many more players than on the older server. This is an investment that will serve our community for many years to come!
Note: The Fundraiser target is set higher than the cost of the hardware to cover processing fees of GoFundMe and Stripe. NOK 22 300 equals roughly USD 2 500 or EUR 2 250.
