Family Affected by Volcano in Guatemala

Donation protected
A few months ago there was a volcanic eruption in Guatemala, near the capital city. The Volcan de Fuego violently erupted and sent large lava flows and pyroclastic flows for miles around which displaced thousands of people from the area and destroyed a few villages surrounding the volcano. Several hundred people were killed with many still missing. The final death count is still unclear and many people have not been able to return to rebuild their homes after several months. Most of the affected people have been living in government shelters ever since but they are severely limited in their resources and there is not room for everyone and many are now living in extreme poverty.

After the eruption my fiancé and I put out a call to our friends and family about sending help with food and medical supplies and many people donated. We were able to collect about $2000 for that and used it to buy clothes and food for the people affected. That type of money goes a long way in these poorer countries and we were able to help quite a few families.

I am traveling to Guatemala again on December 6th for my wedding on December 16th. My fiancé is from there and we are having our wedding in Antigua which is near where the eruption happened. While there, I asked my fiancé to see if there was anything else we could do to help. She found this family that has been living in the area in a shack made from roof sheets. We want to help them however we can so we are putting the call out to our friends again for help. We are planning to buy some essentials like food and clothes for the kids and we also want to get them some mattresses and blankets, they live in the mountains so it gets very cold at night. Basically trying to do anything we can do to help better their situation. I know it is just one family but I also know that we can make a big difference in their lives.

At first we were hoping to only collect clothes and basic food to take and we collected some, but we want to do more if we can. We will be buying some new mattresses for them and good blankets, but we really want to build something more permanent for them if we can. A typical salary for a construction worker in Guatemala is about $15 a day, so with this money we could purchase the land and materials and hire workers to complete the work quickly.

With that I want to ask for your help. I know that there are many people out there that want to do something good for their fellow humans. I am asking for help to be able to help others. I know there are many people suffering in the world, but please help us to do a good thing for this family, to brighten at least a little corner of the world for someone.

Thank you very much for your generous donation!
