Famine Relief near APU Malawi
Donation protected
Malawi is currently experiencing a severe food shortage and our APU neighbours are truly suffering right now. Failed harvests due to poor rainfall, and the earlier effect of cyclone Idai in 2019, have contributed to this national crisis. Atsikana Pa Ulendo Secondary School for girls is located 40 kms outside of Malawi's capital city of Lilongwe.
APU Cofounders Memory Mdyetseni and Christie Johnson are hoping to raise funds to help alleviate the worst of the suffering by providing maize flour to 350 of the most needy individuals in the immediate vicinity of APU. We will target the elderly, orphans, those too ill to work, and widows.
I was inspired to start this gofundme campaign by Memory Mdyesteni, cofounder and Director of APU, who decided not to spend any money celebrating Christmas this year but instead gave away the maize that she had grown on her own personal plot of land to 350 people who were unable to earn money to purchase their own food.
Funds raised by this campaign are not tax receiptable through the APU Malawi Education Foundation, as famine relief is not APU MEF's charitable purpose. However, members of the board are personally supporting this urgent need and they invite both long time supporters and those new to the school to help.”
Funds raised by this campaign will be sent directly to Memory in Malawi who will purchase maize, identify the recipients, and distribute the food. $10,000 will purchase enough maize to feed 350 families for one month, getting them through the worst of the famine. Hunger is expected to begin to decrease in March when the first of the gardens are ready to be harvested.
