Famous Monsters of America Poster Project
Donation protected
Hello friends,
Earlier this summer I completed an art project that targeted corruption and various forms of malfeasance lurking within the American political system. Over the course of 50 days, I merged imagery of 50 contemporary American political figures and pundits, with that of classic Hollywood movie monsters, like Dracula, The Wolf-Man, The Mummy and Frankenstein's Monster. These were housed beneath a fictitious pulp magazine masthead, "Famous Monsters of America," and supplemented with satiric, but fact-based, copy. The goal was to generate awareness about the depth and breadth of corruption associated with the current Administration, hopefully leading to a more well-informed voter. The entire series can be seen here: https://mike-gabriel.com/Famous-Monsters-of-America
Recently, a dear friend and colleague, Britt Gardner, has co-ordinated with a printer to turn 30 of the "Monsters" into large-size posters. (Each has generously donated their time and resources to make this possible. ) Additionally, I have confirmed over 20 contacts in key battleground states who are willing to hang (or wheat paste) 500 posters in strategic, highly visible areas. Unfortunately, printing costs, delays, and express mailing expenses have threatened to derail this phase of the project.
If you are frustrated with the current political landscape, or any of the un-Democratic situations that seem to surface daily—voter suppression, the hypocrisy of Supreme Court Judge nominations, the compromising of the national health and security, or the very real threats to the tenets of Democracy—there is still time to get involved. I know many of you have already made a financial contribution to a politician or a political organization, or have participated in a political action event. But if you are getting that sinking feeling that maybe you haven't done enough, and are interested in getting involved with a little "good trouble," I'm looking to raise $2,500 to print and directly ship 500 "Monster" posters to places like Des Moines, IA; Youngstown, OH; Detroit, MI; Tucson, AZ; Atlanta, GA; Nashville, TN; Pittsburgh, PA; Scranton, PA and Hazleton, PA (the small coal-mining town where I grew up.)
Time is getting tight, but there are still undecided voters out there in battleground states that might benefit from the research and information contained within each poster. To the voters who have committed to voting, the "Monster" posters will provide a last-minute Halloween-inspired reminder to head to the polls on or before November 3rd. If you find yourself in a position to make a financial contribution, even $10 or $20, I would be thrilled and appreciative to have your support. If you can't make a contribution at this time, I understand, but please feel free to forward this GoFundMe link or the link to the "Famous Monsters" series (above) to anyone who make appreciate the message or the cause.
Alright, thank you. Please stay safe and remember to vote!
All the best,
Mike Gabriel
