Fatima's Medical School Journey

In 2017, my family faced devastating repercussions from Donald Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy. Prior to commencing my undergraduate studies, my father was abruptly detained by ICE and subsequently deported to his home country without any prior notification. With him being the sole provider for our family of six, his absence left us in financial turmoil. As I embarked on my college journey, I juggled academics with employment to make ends meet. Every penny I earned went towards preparing for the fall 2021 medical school application cycle.

Despite my diligent efforts, the application cycle didn't unfold as expected, leading me back to California. There, I secured a job at UCLA, initially as a Clinical Research Coordinator and later transitioning to a Clinical Research Associate role at Pfizer. These positions sustained my livelihood in Los Angeles, covering my expenses and bills. Eventually, I applied to Drexel's MS/MD program and was delighted to receive an acceptance.

However, the terms of the program stipulated no employment during the master's year, which concludes in May 2024. Additionally, we were required to purchase iPads, an expense I covered with my earnings. The relocation from Los Angeles to Philadelphia incurred significant costs, depleting my savings entirely. Coupled with the inability to work, the past year has presented immense challenges.

Hence, I am reaching out for support as I prepare for the upcoming fall semester of medical school. Your contribution, regardless of its size, holds profound significance in my journey.
