What a week it has been! This is long, please bear with me. Monday, I was having symptoms of a heart attack. So I went into the ER. The EKG was fine, so on to blood work. The nurse came in and said it was low. I asked if it was below 8. She said yes. I was excited because that meant I could get blood, and this explained what my symptoms were from. So the doctor came in and gave me the choice to go home and have a blood transfusion the next day as outpatient or stay for blood. He never told me my level. I chose to go home, but if I had known I was at 6.3, I would have stayed at the hospital. The regular hemoglobin is 12-16, so 6.3 is low low. When I was having the transfusion the next day, 2 nurses missed that I was to have a blood warmer for my first unit. On the card they used to check the blood to my wrist band and name, in BIG RED LETTERS!! It was caught for the second unit, thank goodness, by a third nurse. I, and they, are so lucky that I didn't go into shock. I could have died. I am so upset with the hospital. The nurses gave me a report of my bloodwork and next to the 6.3 it said: critical! Called in to Dr. ---- by Jamie at 9:50pm. And he still let me go. Wow.
So how did I get so low? I constantly bleed do to my disorder. I had it checked at the thanksgiving and it was 8.9. (They won't transfuse until it is below 8.0). Then my bleeding increased so I went to Billings for laser to slow it down on dec 1. My dermatologist was stunned by my amount of bleeding. He said at that time it was time to look for other treatments as I was the worst he had seen in 4 years. On December 12th, I had my blood checked and it said 8.8. I guess I got accustomed to the amount of bleeding I was having. After two units of blood, it came up to 8.6. And I am still bleeding bad and will have it checked tomorrow.
So what now? I called my dermatologist on Wednesday and he said he was going to call Mayo clinic. They are so concerned that if we can't slow the bleeding down, I will lose the battle. I'm not ready for that. . Thursday morning, I got a call from the Mayo and they had me already set up with dermatologists, vascular surgeons, and my doctor that studies my disorder( which had been retired, but is back on March 7th). My appointment dates are Feb 29th-March 7th. It is so soon. My health status is serious. I think I have tried to be positive but ignored the reality of it. I am really scared. I need your help again, please. I don't have money for this, but I can't afford not to go. Plane tickets are at 500 each. My mom will go with me as my husband delivers news papers as a second income and it will be difficult to find subs for 8 days. And then hotel, food and car rental. If you can help even a little, we would be so grateful! Thank you so much!
