Feed a Piggy for Christmas
Donation protected
I am Captain Ben Green, Pirate chief of the good ship “The Barracks”.
In the early 1950s the country formerly known as East Germany cleared a five hectare site in the middle of a 3000 hectare forest, erected three and a half thousand meters of brutalist soviet living space, and moved the army in. Young lads had rifles pushed into their hands and were told to shoot anyone trying to cross an imaginary line to the decadent west.
Now, it is my home.
We are battered by biblical rainfalls, tempestuous winds, and siberian snows. This is the coldest part of western Europe and I am growing peaches, apricots and vines.
I am on a mission to create a beautiful small holding, to teach, to inspire and to show the world that there are alternatives to the modern life which we have thrust upon us.
So far, I have more than thirty different fruit trees and bushes, a nut orchard, over a hundred vegetable sorts in 1000m2 "jardin potager" (vegetable garden), medicinal and culinary herbs, and three little piggies called Brunhilda Demagogue, Sir Anthony Marmalade Nutsless and Marilyn Monroe.
This GoFundMe is all about Brunni, Fat Tony and Marilyn.
I always knew that I would want to have some rescue animals here. I did not expect it to be this year. These three characters were going to be sausages when I heard about them, so a rescue mission was undertaken, and after some excitement, we eventually got them back to their new home.
As a self-sufficient smallholding, I will in the future (next year) be growing all the food that they need. This year, in spring and autumn, we have so far been able to feed them with apples and corn and pumpkins and lots and lots of fresh grass. I even gave them the watermelons which I managed to grow here in Saxony, Germany!
But now, as we enter winter, I can't feed them properly. I need to buy in food for them. This will be the only year that I do this. Like I said, next year I will be planting a new field of sunflowers and potatoes and fodder beet and oats especially for the piggies.
But, they were unexpected new family guests, and as such, I don't have enough food on the barracks to give to them.
Pigs eat about 4% of their weight per day. The time between basically now and when I will be able to run them every day on fresh pasture is about 180 days.
Brunni is a bit bigger than Marylin, and Fat Tony is actually quite slim. They average about 60kg each.
4% of (3 x 60kg) is 7.2kg food per day.
7.2kg for a 180 days is about 1300kg
On top of this, they should have plenty of access to hay
I would like to get for them 250kg of feed peas, and 2 Big Bags (750kg each) of "universal piggie food".
Also, two 400kg bales of hay. They cost about 80 euros each.
Whenever I have grass for them, they will get that. Also, I have great relationships with some bakers, shops and other contacts, and we will be getting stale bread (which is actually good enough for me to eat as well!), unsellable vegetables, and some apples. They are not going to get bored for food, I just need the bulk stuff for them.
So how much does your donation benefit the piggies?
10€ feeds one piggie for 3.5 days, so
20€ provides all the nutritional satisfaction for one piggie for a whole week!
and 60€ therefore keeps all three of them in great tasting pig food for a week.
But, any contribution, 1€ or 100€ shows me that you support what I am doing here, and that means every bit as much.
If you can't help out at all, then I hope you will consider sharing this project to help reach a wider audience. That would be amazing, and I thank you deeply!
Thank you so much for reading all of this. If you have met the piggies, you will know how they really are the illuminating soul of the barracks.
Finally, if you would like your donation to be a gift, what with all the seasonal stuff coming up, let me know and I will give you a link to a downloadable certificate and some exclusive high resolution piggie photos for you to download and put inside a greetings card of your choice.
