Help feed children in Kibera and Kawangware, Kenya
Donation protected
Hiya Ben Bertoldi here
aka That Big Benergy
I'm working with the Fresh Cuts Foundation and Glasgow Education Centre to provide food to children (4-13) in Kibera and Kawangware, Nairobi, Kenya - some of the largest urban slums in Africa after an inspiring visit to Kawangware and more this week.
⛰️ Mt Kilimanjaro Trek
I will be dedicating my attempt to trek to Mount Kilimanjaro's peak via from 26 March - 2 April 2024 via the Machame route to the school and Fresh Cuts Foundation as paying forward kindness has always been a huge inspiration to me.
❤️ Why?
Kibera, one of Africa's largest slums, houses between 250,000 and 1 million people in less than 1 square mile (2.5 sq km), with residents often sharing makeshift wood or tin shacks with multiple others. Living in extreme poverty, most earn less than $2 a day, and 12% of the population is HIV-positive, facing daily challenges of disease and alcoholism. Access to clean water, sanitation, electricity, healthcare, and food is scarce. In neighboring Kawangware, with over 80,000 inhabitants spread across approximately 3km, poverty is similarly rampant, with over 65% of adults unemployed and limited educational opportunities.
Teenage pregnancy, crime, and prostitution are common as children often go without schooling and clean water, leading to prevalent waterborne diseases. The community also grapples with the significant impact of HIV/AIDS, resulting in an increase in street children, prostitution, suicide, and social isolation among the infected.
Your donation to Fresh Cuts Foundation can make a tangible difference, with $30AUD enough to provide a meal to over 100 vulnerable children at Glasgow Education Centre for a day, and $150AUD for a full week.
️ How Your Donation Helps
Currently the Foundation can only afford to generously feed the kids of Glasgow Education Centre one day each week. This lunch meal is critical to ensuring the children can focus, learn and attend school plus helps ensure they have at least 2-3 meals that day. It may be one of the only meals they get to eat that day.
Fundraising Goal:
- Target: $500AUD by 2 April 2024
- Matched donation: If I make Mt Kili peak will match goal.
- Context: 60% don't make peak so using as motivation.
Nails of courage
If we get to $500AUD by 4pm AEST on 25 April I will get my nails painted by Fresh Cuts Barber and Saloon with art inspired by the Glasgow Education School to keep me inspired and brave.

⏩ After this fundraiser?
It's not going to stop here they need books, a new toilet and more but let's start here, start small and never give up on love and kindness. Plus I will try to get a job back in Australia after Mt Kilimanjaro to keep supporting Fresh Cuts Foundation.
