Feed the Motor Taxi Drivers (Motari)

Donation protected
Motorcycle taxis are a key part of Kigali’s transportation system, and thousands of young Rwandans make their living driving motor taxis. As the crisis surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic is rising, a significant number of families living on income as daily motor taxi drivers (Motari in Kinyarwanda) have shaken their livelihoods. We have launched the 'Feed the Motor Taxi Drivers (Motari)' project to provide these families with food assistance and enable them to receive a supply of groceries in the absence of job opportunities. The ongoing COVID-19 crisis countermeasures have affected them adversely leading to 50,000+ drivers with zero earnings. ‘Feed the Motor Taxi Drivers’ aims to raise money to support such drivers with food supplies for their families, and fund other medical or emergency needs during these times of lockdown.

Rwanda is in a situation where social distancing, isolation or shutting down of cities has the drivers unable to work because the majority are informally employed, and they depend on daily earnings for survival. The lack of paid time off, sick pay or safety net for the majority of the drivers will weaken the quarantine measures imposed by the government and make it challenging to convince people to stay at home.

This is a time when the STRENGTH and SOLIDARITY of the motor taxi community is being challenged. All Rwanda residents are familiar with motor taxi drivers. We appeal to everyone willing to donate to the ‘Feed Motor taxi (Motari) Drivers’ effort, so that we can help the driver community who cannot afford to stockpile essential food during the quarantine or isolation period see the other side of these unprecedented times.

Our total goal of $3,500 will be used to distribute a week worth of food/supplies toolkits to each of the families of 100 motor taxi drivers (selected as of now) who are unable to work currently. We have partnered with multiple motor taxi cooperatives on the ground to help ensure responsible distribution of these supplies while adhering to social distancing guidelines.

This project is a 100% not-for-profit campaign, and we will disclose the use of proceeds in a financial transparency report sent to all contributors to the campaign.
