Sysco's Fort Mac Drivers
Donation protected
On May 1st, a fire sparked in the tinder dry boreal forest surrounding Fort McMurray, Alberta. The following day, the fire erupted around the perimeter and quickly advanced towards the heart of Fort McMurray. When the city started to evacuate, many residents fled to the to the work camps outside of Fort Mac. The majority of those camps receive their food and supplies from Sysco, and those camps desperately needed large orders of food, water, and other essentials in order to support the growing number of evacuees.
Over 2,400 homes and businesses were lost over the next number of days, and 94,000 people evacuated the city. Despite the evacuation, the more than 20 members of Sysco’s delivery team stayed on the job and continued to service customers, including the six that had just suffered the loss of their own family homes. These delivery drivers persevered and drove through the burning city and "hallways of flames", often having to cross RCMP blockades on multiple occasions to get food and water to first responders and evacuees. In the advanced stages of the fire, they even had to wear respirator masks as they were completing their deliveries to protect themselves from smoke inhalation.
Our delivery team has proven that they are #SyscoHeroes, and to show recognition for their outstanding effort, we ask for you to consider helping the homeless delivery drivers who have lost their family homes to rebuild their lives.
