Help make a difference to the lives of fellow Canadians who are in need of assistance with securing nutritious food and regular balanced meals by donating your unused and unsold food otherwise destined for landfill.
Feed it Forward, eliminate waste, and help share our Canadian abundance.
My name is Jagger Gordon and I’m a Canadian, executive chef, caterer, and founder of the ‘Feed Families’ freezer program and ‘Feed It Forward’ community food program. I am also the creator of the FeeditForward mobile app that is currently under development.
I want to talk to you about food. More specifically, about the amount that is bypassing hungry Canadians and ending up in landfills as a result of current government legislation which prohibits restaurants, grocery stores, and food manufacturers from donating perfectly nutritious and consumable food items to outreach and community food programs simply because they are nearing their labeled expiration dates.
The result - Canada throws away $31 billion worth of consumable food every year, or to put it in more staggering terms - 40% of all food produced in Canada ends up in landfill - 40%! - while 1 in 7 (or 4.9 million) people live in poverty. As a chef and caterer, I face this food-waste reality every day and in 2014 I reached a point where I could no longer stand by and let this happen with a clear conscience.
My first response was the creation of the ‘Feed Families’ freezer program which provides a number of qualifying families, on a monthly rotation, with nutritionally dense meals made from food items or leftover meals donated by a growing number of food producers in Toronto and the GTA who share the same vision of eliminating food waste by utilizing the Good Samaritan Law – you know the food you’re donating is good, I know it’s good, and it’s helping to feed people living with food insecurity.
Overwhelmed by the growing number of individuals and families applying for this program, ‘Feed it Forward’ was born. This program, once again supported by a small but growing number of the city and GTA’s food producers, runs every Monday on the east side of Nathan Phillips Square and provides a nutritious, hot meal to the city’s homeless, economically vulnerable, and anyone else who self-identifies as being in need. The numbers we are able to feed depends entirely on how much food has been donated – which is why I built this site: I need your help.
Both ‘Feed Families’ and ‘Feed it Forward’ are not-for-profit programs which rely on volunteers with a social-justice, common-sense mentality. If you are a restaurant, café, grocery store, or food manufacturing facility that routinely throws away consumable food items, please consider joining the growing network of food donors who are already making a difference. If you are the owner of a commercial kitchen or freezer facility, please consider offering your space for my team of qualified chefs to prepare meals for both programs or as a place to store the monthly meals for qualifying individuals and families.
I have petitioned the Canadian government to make a change to legislation and have uploaded an online petition which I would actively encourage you to sign. After all, everyone’s personal and financial circumstances can change on a dime and we never know when we, too, might need support securing one of the life’s necessities.
Welcome to FeeditForward.ca. If you are unable to find the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to partnering with you in the sharing of Canada’s food abundance.
