Fernando Elias's Medical Expenses

Cancer, something we are all terrified about. Some find it early, and some find it late. For my cousin, Fernando, it all started last year around May. First, it began with stomach aches and back aches to the point that he couldn't sit comfortably anymore. Eventually, he began to go to doctors' appointments about these symptoms. Appointment after appointment, he was finally "diagnosed" with hemorrhoids. Due to that, he got treatments that he would follow as instructed, but oddly enough, they wouldn't help. He eventually got recommended to a doctor in Mexico, and around September, his mom and he packed their bags and took a flight to Mexico. He met up with this doctor, who did tests on him. One of the tests was a biopsy, and in that biopsy, they found a cancerous tumor in his colon. Due to that, he decided to come back to the United States to get better and faster treatment. Once he was here, he got the true diagnosis: colon cancer. Keep in mind that throughout all of this, the symptoms and pain got worse and worse as time went on. To the point that he got out of work and just made more time for this disease. There was a point where he knew this was just the calm before the storm. Only the beginning of everything. At the end of February of this year, he began radiation, which led to March, where he began chemotherapy. Midway through this year, he got told that his cancer got worse, Stage 3. Due to the consequences of this type of cancer, on a daily basis, he had to be in specific positions so it would help ease the pain he was in. Which led him to getting a fracture in his lower spine. Fast forward to this month. On the 5th of October, he had to undergo a risky spine surgery at UCSF Hospital. Due to the stage his cancer is in, recovery has been having its ups and downs. Right now, his family and he are in need of all the support they can get.

 

This is something very important, not only to me but to our whole family. We never thought this would happen to him, of all people. He was the jokester in the family. The one at parties that would always have the microphone and just make people laugh and have huge automatic smiles on their faces. He is just someone very special in many of our lives, and we want to be there for him.

 

All the funds here will be given to his family and him to help out with not only his medical expenses but also to help out his wife and kids. There are times his wife has to take time off of work just to help him or take care of him. Due to that, they just need a little more help. Thank you and God bless you all.

Cáncer, algo que a todos nos aterroriza. Algunos lo encuentran temprano y otros lo encuentran tarde. Para mi primo Fernando, todo empezó el año pasado, alrededor de mayo. Primero, comenzó con dolores de estómago y de espalda hasta el punto de que ya no podía sentarse cómodamente. Con el tiempo, comenzó a ir a las citas médicas por estos síntomas. Cita tras cita, finalmente le "diagnosticaron" hemorroides. Debido a eso, recibió tratamientos que seguia según las instrucciones, pero, curiosamente, no ayudaron. Finalmente le recomendaron a un médico en México y, alrededor de septiembre, su madre y él hicieron sus maletas y tomaron un vuelo a México. Se reunió con este médico, quien le hizo pruebas. Una de las pruebas fue una biopsia, y en esa biopsia encontraron un tumor canceroso en su colon. Debido a eso, el decidio regresar a los Estados Unidos para recibir un tratamiento mejor y más rápido. Una vez aquí, recibió el verdadero diagnóstico: cáncer de colon. Teniendo en cuenta que durante todo esto, los síntomas y el dolor empeoraron cada vez más a medida que pasaba el tiempo. Hasta el punto de que dejó de trabajar y simplemente dedicó más tiempo a esta enfermedad. Hubo un punto en el que supo que esto era sólo la calma antes de la tormenta. Sólo el comienzo de todo. A finales de febrero de este año comenzó la radiación, lo que llevó a marzo, donde comenzó la quimioterapia. A mediados de este año le dijeron que su cáncer empeoró, Etapa 3. Debido a las consecuencias de este tipo de cáncer, diariamente tenía que estar en posiciones específicas que ayudaran a aliviar el dolor que sentía. Lo que le llevó a sufrir una fractura en la parte baja de la columna. El 5 de octubre tuvo que someterse a una cirugía arriesgada de la columna en el Hospital UCSF. Debido a la etapa en la que se encuentra su cáncer, la recuperación ha tenido sus subidas y bajadas. En este momento, su familia y él necesitan todo el apoyo que puedan obtener.

Esto es algo muy importante, no sólo para mí sino para toda nuestra familia. Nunca pensamos que esto le pasaría a él, precisamente a él. Era el bromista de la familia. El que en las fiestas siempre tenía el micrófono y hacía reír a la gente y tenía enormes sonrisas automáticas en la cara. Él es alguien muy especial en muchas vidas y queremos estar ahí para él.

Todos los fondos aquí se entregarán a su familia y a él para ayudarlo no solo con sus gastos médicos sino también para ayudar a su esposa e hijos. Hay ocasiones en que su esposa tiene que dejar el trabajo para ayudarlo o cuidarlo. Por eso, necesitan un poco más de ayuda. Gracias y que dios los bendigan.
