My father always said, “At least we're together" every time something went wrong or was out of our control.
My dad, Fernando Garcia Obeso, died on Monday October 10, 2016 of a cardiac arrest. He had been feeling horrible all morning, too badly to take my little sister Sofia (15) to school like usual. I encouraged him to go to the doctor, but as usual he was too stubborn and concerned for us to take care of himself. He had no prior heart conditions, so when I found him barely able to breathe, I was in a shock. I immediately called the paramedics, but after half an hour of trying, they were unable to resuscitate him.
We have been a low income family ever since I can remember. My mother left us in 2009, and my father supported my sister and I. He worked cleaning hospitals and giving tours to people all around Baja California, which was his true passion. Paychecks were few and far between, and he always spent what he could on his children and their future. His dream was to someday make it to local television through interviews with influential locals of Baja California, and all the beauty it has to offer. Every year he’d also dedicate a large portion of his time helping run a toy drive, which gives toys to poor and orphaned children in Baja California. He always believed in the power of people, community, and the power of the story.
So now, I don’t know where else to turn but back to the people. I don’t know what to do and we need groceries, power, running water, transportation, and other resources we can no longer afford at all. Our extended family was kind enough to help cover funeral expenses, but beyond that we’re on our own. I’m doing my best to find a job to support my little sister and I, but I don’t think I can support us both alone. Any donations you can spare will be greatly appreciated, and will go towards interview clothes, new shoes, heating during the winter, food, bus expenses, and other necessities.
