Cancer Journey

Hello my name is Valerie Calderone, I’m 21 years old. Before April of this year my life was completely normal, I was a full time employee and a full time student. I was going to college to become a nurse. Beginning of April, I discovered a lump on my neck. I panicked and made a doctors appointment for the same day, got an ultrasound done and waited. Those results came back and they sent me to do a CT scan, after that they wanted a biopsy. On May 4th 2023 I was diagnosed with cancer Lymphoma Hodgkin’s. My life completely changed, in other words my life paused. I stopped attending college to focus on my health issues. Being 21 years old with cancer means I also have to think about my fertility and I have to act fast. Ever since I was little I always dreamt of having a family when I’m older, I never thought I would have to make a decision about this now. My dad had this same type of cancer and unfortunately he passed away when I was 9 so this was always a big concern in my life but I never thought I was going to get it. My mom lives in Peru, we are doing everything we can to bring her to the states to be with me. Even with insurance coverage, treatments are expensive. When having cancer and being treated with chemotherapy they let you know the risk of it killing your eggs because the medication is so strong and powerful. I will start my cancer treatments on June 8th but before starting I need to do my fertility process. If you could help me with anything, it would mean the world to me.

Hola me llamo Valerie Calderone, tengo 21 años. Antes del mes de Abril mi vida era complemente normal. Trabajaba tiempo completo y estudiaba tiempo completo para ser enfermera. A principios de Abril descubrí un bulto en mi cuello, me desesperé y saqué cita con el doctor el mismo día. Me mandaron a sacar un ultrasonido y espere los resultados. Cuando llegaron los resultados, me mandaron a hacer una tomografía. Después de esos resultados querían una biopsia. El día 4 de Mayo de este año me diagnosticaron con Cancer Lymphoma Hodgkin’s. Desde ese día mi vida cambio, mejor dicho se pausó. Tuve que dejar la universidad para concentrarme en mi salud. Teniendo 21 años con Cancer tenía que pensar en mi fertilidad y también tenía que actuar rápido sobre esta decisión. Desde pequeña siempre he soñado con tener mi familia, nunca pensé que iba a tener que decidir esto ahora. Mi papá tuvo el mismo tipo de cancer que el mío, desafortunadamente el falleció cuando tenía 9 años. Mi mamá vive en Peru, estamos haciendo todo lo posible para que venga a Estados Unidos para que este conmigo durante este proceso. A pesar de mi seguro médico, los tratamientos son caros. Cuando tienes cancer las probabilidades de quedar infértil son altas por la quimioterapia ya que son muy fuertes. Comenzaré mi primer tratamiento de quimioterapia el 8 de Junio es por eso la premura de recolectar mis ovulos antes de mi quimioterapia. Si me podrías ayudar con lo que sea, lo apreciaría demasiado.
