Hi, we are the brothers and sisters of Mike Wright. And we have created a gofundme page for our brother Mike Wright.
On the 4th of July, we were together as brothers and sisters celebrating our country, and nine days later,
we were in the hospital in Sioux City awaiting the outcome of what happened to our brother Mike. Mike
had an episode at home and could not breathe; he went to the ER in Cherokee, where they
immediately sent him to Sioux City. Mike had a mass of blood clots in the middle of his chest branching out to each lung
and needed surgery immediately. Pulmonary embolism is what he was told. His blood platelets were only
22,000 and should be for a normal count around 150,000 to 450,000. Drs suctioned out 14 inches of
blood clots that were in his lungs. Drs have never seen so many clots like this and was a very lucky
person to survive this. The next morning Mike had surgery to take blood clots from his leg.
Two days later, he had exploratory surgery for his heart. So, he had three surgeries in less than four days.
Mike was put on Heparin, a blood thinner, and was told he needed a new artificial heart valve. His heart
was only pumping 38%. He is now on oxygen until this can be resolved.
As days went on, Mike was bruising, his feet were swelling up, and his toes were turning dark purple withblisters. Drs there were proactive and took him off of Heparin, a blood thinner. They sent a blood
sample to Mayo and returned with the results that Mike had HIT, a severe allergic reaction to Heparin
and a high mortality rate of bleeding out. Only 2-5% of the population get this allergic reaction. The
doctor put him on argatroban to get his platelets up to 50,000 and then got him on Eliquis.
Mike is also suffering from neuropathy in his feet and feels like he is walking on glass. Walking is a very
difficult thing for him to accomplish.
Mike’s stay at Mercy was 19 days, and in now recuperating at his sister’s home in Quimby. He needs to
get his strength back to be able to have heart surgery. Mike is on insulin now as his sugar count was 500
and we all know how expensive medicine can be. His medical bills are mounting, and that is why I am
here asking for help. Mike retired from the Hy-Vee warehouse and would like to enjoy his well-earned
retirement. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
