Hey y’all, I’m Cherry.
I’m a 28 year old trans woman living in Frederick, MD. Been here for almost 4 years. I’m an artist, musician, and event organizer. I wait tables for a job.
On September 1st me and my roommate are getting kicked out of our apartment due to property management changing hands. Our rent will nearly double and we will likely not meet the qualifications set by the new landlords in order to stay here. Neither of us will be able to afford to continue to live in Frederick.
The entirety of the time I’ve lived in Frederick, I have not owned a vehicle, mostly bc I’ve lived and worked in downtown so having transportation was not necessary to my survival.
It has had its drawbacks tho, mainly not being able to leave downtown lmao.
This gfm is intended to raise money for a down payment on a reliable van, a storage unit and containers for my things, and to buy time until I have enough savings to confidently apply for apartments. Any excess will go towards general living expenses, current rent, etc.
Living in a van is the most tangible method of survival I can conceive, and it’s something I have done before (out of necessity). The Summer of 2017 I lived out of a green 1997 Chevrolet Astro van, slept in parking lots and at friends’ houses, took baths in rutters bathroom sinks, etc. I wrote the first album by The Swamp Whompers while living in that van.

I don’t want to uproot and move somewhere far away right now bc I have finally begun to feel like a part of the Frederick community, and I have been working to contribute my own piece thru clown camp (what me and my roommate call our backyard where we have shows, potlucks, and open mics, where people feel safe and comfortable being vulnerable and sharing their art.)
