Facing Homelessness

Hello, everyone, my name is Iman, and I’m a hardworking single mom of a toddler. Unfortunately, my baby and I are at imminent risk of eviction.Right now my leasing office is demanding $6500 or I will be evicted. I have been behind on my rent since April 2023 due to disastrous employment circumstances. I was offered a financially promising position with a car dealership (Nissan Location)

However, my job at the dealership was an absolute nightmare. The dealership promised me pay after onboarding, but I did not receive it. I had to advocate for my earnings, including missing bonuses/commissions.

The gross errors on the part of the dealership led me to fall way behind on my rent. My pay was $15/hr plus commission. However, I only received my hourly pay. My rent is $1736 monthly plus other expenses, including daycare for my two-year-old.

Upon resigning from the dealership in June 2023, they withheld my last paycheck!

I’ve repeatedly contacted Pennsylvania's Bureau of Labor Law Compliance to receive my unpaid wages. Nevertheless, I’m in a giant financial hole with no end. I’ve contacted community organizations for help and am still waiting to hear back.

Had I never taken this dubious job offer with the dealership, I would NOT be at risk of being homeless. As a single mom of a two-year-old, I cannot lose my apartment and be forced onto the streets or in a shelter.

Since April, I have contributed to my monthly rent to reduce the balance. I found an excellent remote job with benefits! I am playing catch-up with my bills, including rent. But, I still owe the management company over $6500.

UPDATE

I now have been charged for the legal filing fee’s regarding my eviction and have been informed that I have 30 days to vacate. I have been reaching out to rental assistance in hopes of circumventing, however I have been denied. I really hate asking for help but at this point I don’t know what else to do and I have a small child. Anything will help thanks so much!
