Funds required for life saving treatment not available on NHS
''I'm going to fight for my life despite the devastating prognosis''
Our wonderful, loving Dad, Husband & Grandad Damian is fighting cancer and is desperately fundraising for potentially life-saving treatment. The Droylsden resident was told the devastating news last year that he had an aggressive form of rectal / liver cancer.
Diagnosis: Rectal adenocarcinoma with liver metastases
Despite a major operation and chemotherapy, the 60-year-old recently received the heart-breaking news that the cancer is not responding to treatment, and he might only have months to live. But Damian has said that he refuses to give up his fight for life. ''I have so much more to live for: I want to see my cheeky 1 year old grandson grow up and to be able to spend many more years with my beautiful wife and my 3 children.''
Treatment history –
December 2019 - Damian successfully completed a full course of neoadjuvant chemotherapy
January 2020 - Damian received a short course of radiotherapy in preparation for next stage - liver surgery
April 2020 - Damian went into Manchester Royal Infirmary for Liver surgical resection to be carried out, when coming out of that surgery the surgeon informed Damian that he had more metastases within the liver that he had hoped therefore would need a second surgery when the liver recovers from the first surgery
July 2020 - Damian's second liver surgery was originally booked for . However, CT Scan in June 2020 shown progression of the liver metastases and the surgery was cancelled
July 2020 - Damian then commenced his second round of chemotherapy using Folfirinox– unfortunately to which there was no successful response. The cancer within the liver had not been affected by the chemotherapy.
Due to the chemotherapy not working, Damian has been offered and alternative potential life-saving treatment available is called SIRT, a new immunotherapy treatment available in the UK, which does not come with funding.(
Due to the number of metastases this treatment is not available on the NHS) Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) is a way of giving radiotherapy treatment for cancer in the liver.
This potential life-saving treatment in Damian's case is only available privately to which he will have to quickly fund himself and its costs are between £ 30-50 thousand any money that is raised will help towards this treatment
If at a later stage and he requires a liver transplant this is not available on the NHS and he will have to go abroad for treatment – but until liver is stable this is not an option at present
We as a family understand that there is a lot of heartache out there at the moment, both in terms of health and financially due to Covid-19. All we can say is that anything you can donate to help will be very much appreciated
Damian's children have set up the GoFundMe page after researching the treatments which could be available to their father. ''My family have set up a crowdfunding page to try to raise some money so that I can have this alternative treatment. I don’t have a lot of time and so if you can donate anything, I will be forever grateful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.''
What do you do when you’re told you only have a few months left to live?
You love with all your heart and go out and live what life you have left.
For life. For love. For the loving family surrounding you.
What do you do when you only have a few months left to live?
You appreciate every moment, and every breath you take.
