“Surviving and Advancing”,
“Fighting Like a Champion” -- these have been Eric Von Schaumburg’s mantras for more than 7 years after being diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Despite this disease stealing so much from him, (talking, walking, eating, breathing, and complete paralysis) he has never, ever given up. Instead, he has embraced an attitude of positivity, gratitude, and grit. And every fall since his diagnosis, we have rallied behind him and his family, both celebrating his strength and providing our support at the annual Fight Like A Champion fundraising event. Through this support, we have all helped to give Eric and his family the opportunity to keep living, to keep advancing, to keep surviving. The money raised at this event has been critical to cover his extraordinary expenses, including life saving medical care, equipment rental, a multitude of supplies, physical and personal care items, transportation needs, prescription drugs not covered or partially covered by insurance, etc.
Round the clock nurse care for Eric has provided him with medical care that has helped in fewer hospital visits and also given him much needed companionship from the nurses who love and cherish him so much. They have become his second family. 2020, a trying year for all of us, has brought on an exceptional burden of worry for Eric and his family, the real possibility of losing this essential skilled nurse care which is so vital to Eric’s survival. The cost of this care is astronomical. Regardless of the present ongoing insurance situation, Eric’s 24/7 nursing care will terminate when his COBRA policy ends in 2021, which will lead to no coverage of the critical 24/7 nurse care he presently receives. The expectation is that out of pocket expenses for continued coverage will exceed $450,000 annually.
Because of Covid-19, the Von’s will not have the opportunity to have us all together for the eighth annual Night to Fight Benefit, which has been the primary avenue helping Eric’s family cover his medical costs. As I think about what most of us have experienced this year with stay at home orders, feeling confined at home and isolated from friends and family, I cannot even begin to imagine what the 7+ years has been like for Eric who has been experiencing this on an entirely different level. Eric is one the the most loving, gregarious, selfless people I have ever met, always striving to make us laugh, make us feel appreciated, make US feel special. And he needs us now more than ever. We recognize these times are hard for everyone right now, but if you can find any way to donate to Eric’s medical expenses for this upcoming year, even the smallest amount, it would be immensely appreciated. Stay Well and we are ever so grateful for your support!
