Distribute the Book "On Tyranny" for Free Nationwide

Devastated and dejected by results of the presidential election? Worried that we're on a downward slide into fascism? Wondering what's coming next, and how to help stop it?

The 2017 book On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century, by historian and Yale scholar Timothy Snyder, uses short lessons from history to explain what's going on now...and more importantly, how to recognize the signs around us and resist them before we're sucked in. It's a short, easy read, appropriate for everyone from young teens to adult readers.

We'd like to buy copies of On Tyranny in bulk to donate to Little Free Libraries all over the country.

A local independent bookstore agreed to offer a very generous discount off the cover price for bulk orders!

All we need is...the funds to buy the books. With the discount, and including local taxes, the price for each book is about $7.70.

Any amount helps...and any extra above the cost of the book will be used for shipping costs! Keep in mind that every book we buy is likely to reach more than one person...so your donation is effectively multiplied!

Besides ordering the books, organizing volunteers to distribute the books, and shipping copies to volunteers, we will put a short note inside each book encouraging whoever takes it from a library to pass it on to another person or another Little Free Library.

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

On Tyranny is a call to arms and a guide to resistance, with invaluable ideas for how we can preserve our freedoms in the uncertain years to come.

Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.

Little Free Library is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes neighborhood book exchanges, usually in the form of a public bookcase. More than 150,000 public book exchanges are registered with the organization. Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are exchanged each year, with the aim of increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.

The organization's Impact Library Program has granted more than 1,500 Little Free Libraries at no cost to communities where they are needed most. Their Read in Color initiative has reached 14 cities and distributed more than 40,000 diverse books celebrating BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized voices.
