Protect Children Against City Highway Project
Donation protected
We - Protecting the Children of Orchard School - are a group of parents and teachers at Orchard School (K-8) in San José, CA trying to protect our over 850 students from a highway project and to prevent the City of San José from bulldozing over our school.
The City of San José plans to spend $54 million to dramatically widen the road behind our school to build a freeway overpass leading to directly to another highway (SR-87).
This will mean a smaller school, more traffic - potentially more than 20,000 cars and trucks a day right next to our classrooms, ball field and playground - as well as more pollution, more noise and will separate the school from the neighborhood.
Organizations such as Mothers Out Front Silicon Valley, the Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter, Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action, Breath California and the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition have also come out to oppose this project.
We've pleaded with the City for years to not put our children at risk and build a connection for just bikes and pedestrian instead. But on June 9th, 6 out of 11 council members decided against us by approving the environmental report (EIR) and that this project should move forward.
As a last resort, we are suing the City over the EIR. As many of our families are already struggling to pay their bills, we need help to cover the legal fees for this fight.
The $15,000 dollars we are trying to raise now would help us cover the first phase of the lawsuit, but we will likely need more to continue the fight. Should we prevail, any remaining funds would go our school PTA to continue to support our students.
We believe children are more important than cars!
We can't continue to build roads, if we want to fight climate change.
Your donation will help protect our children. THANK YOU!
